What have you tried to mimic of theirs exactly?
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Loefahs backing them. Simple as.
It is way more than that. You cannot deny this is a bad boy tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoabVM4DokQ

I am not a fan of most of their stuff but this is just ill. This tune has everything I look for in a track. Atmosphere, great rhythm, bass and a hook!

Its true. I quite like some of their stuff too but there are soooo many people out there who wouldnt have liked their stuff if it hadnt had loefahs blessing first of all.

I dont really think that deep down people can disagree with this.
I heard them way back when Skream was playing their shit years ago. I liked them then, way before Loefah had put them on Swamp.

Wasn't they meant to be releasing on Dysfigured Dubz?!

nice!

A small suggestion. with the vocal samples at the start I would have the delay come on at the end of the vocal, not all the way thru like it is. So the end of the speech delays off.

I also did something that is heavily influenced by KM. Will upload sometime if I remember, its a blatant bite:D

send the vocal to a delay. put extreme compression on the delay. make the side chain signal the vocal.

so the delay won't be all through the vocals but it'll tail off at the end.

just saying a technique I'm not saying I do it myself. but it sounds dope. i never sidechain

Never heard of doing it this way with vocals! I will have to try and remember how to side chain in Reason or FL, been ages! :D

Kryptic Minds said it in the '07 production thread on DOA that's linked in this topic.

tbh kryptic minds dubstep isnt particularly complicated as far as production goes, especially when you compare it to their d+b. the key as far as i can tell is keeping it very minimal with hypnotic grooves and bass, and then lots of subtle atmos and almost technoey synth stabs and stuff in the background. plus, unlike quite a lot of dubstep, there is a very large chunk of proper dub influence in it. the key is in the subtlety rather than obnoxious in your face 'rarara' type stuff.

its fucking good though, really lovely hypnotic moody mechanical warmness.

I think it's deceptively simple, takes a shitload of skill to make a mix sound as big and as deep as they do with such minimal elements. The more subtle the production technique the better you know the skills are. Especially with these guys.

yeah dont get me wrong, their sounds are very well engineered and they are fucking good producers, i knew that before i ever heard their dubstep, their d+b is fucking deep and yet has some really sick beats and bass that i'd rate alongside, perhaps even higher than noisia and spor, because they dont sound so 'plastic'. with stuff as minimal as their dubstep the key is getting the sounds to be fucking sick, so that they will stand out on their own without having to cover up any ropey bits with other elements in the mix.

it also helps that they use a bit of hardware, always a bonus for warmth and fatness.

I think its best summed up by them preferring to refer to it as "trip-hip" really
