Re: Smith & Mighty's Brain Scan is the first Dubstep tune!!!
I've been a fan since early 90's. I'm OLD! late 30's. It was them & Massive Attack that transformed bass heavy music for me. Then Hardcore to Jungle to Drum & Bass to UK Garage to Broken Beat to Dubstep & UK Funky. Smith & Mighty were originators!!!!
Here's a Dub influenced Garage track they did in 2002. Or early Dubstep tune along El B, Zed Bias, Horsepower Prod., & Stereotyp & Tikiman (People always forget about dem). AMAZING TUNE!!!

Smith & Mighty friggin rule.
Those albums are superb.
EVERYONE on the forum should own a copy of Bass Is Maternal end of story.
A shame Smith & Mighty didn't sell more records........I mean their albums kicked Massive Attack's ass.

RSD is a pure gentleman of the dub, badman producer and top guy! x
Re: Smith & Mighty's Brain Scan is the first Dubstep tune!!!
excellent find, thanks for posting that up I'd never heard that one before... came out about 13 years before what I previously thought their first dubstep tune was, which would be Move You Run from Big World, Small World. Also a friggin great album with lots of deep dub & bass.
S&M just weren't as commercially digestible or radio-friendly as Massive Attack -- their tracks don't really have the playability of something like Unfinished Sympathy. However, they are probably a stronger creative influence on me for the weird, bad sounds they manage to join together.

Re: Smith & Mighty's Brain Scan is the first Dubstep tune!!!
Smith & Mighty/More Rockers were easily the best out Bristol to me, but from what I've heard they had label/distribution problems. Was lucky enough to discover their music in 97. Shame that the type of D&B they were making never got much look from anyone within D&B especially by the likes of Bryan Gee/V seeing as V was pretty much a label for Bristol and Dillinja and Lemon's tunes. Big World Small World, Bass is Maternal is more Dubstep than actual Dubstep, and Selection 2 is still one of my favorite D&B albums.
