there are old jamaican masters like lee 'scratch' perry, king tubby, scientist, joe gibbs, solomon jabby and lots of others
then there is this new-school 'future dub' thing from african head charge, brain damage, zenzile, etc
there's electronic dub from disrupt and the likes
techno/minimal dub with rhythm and sound

guess lee perry was right that any kind of music can be made into dub

i would also recommend to see a movie called 'dub echoes', search youtube for a trailer.

I am always amazed at the number of people in dubstep who havn't listened to dub. I guess because I listened to it before I got into dubstep it's always been in the back of my mind when I 've been producing, I think I'm always inclined towards that sort of sound. The way the old guys (and new people too, but I won't count them ) would make their sound so stripped back but full at the same time is amazing.

Tripwire, since you started listening recently, have you recognised techniques that people use in dubstep in the old dub?

mostly some delay techniques and some similar drum patterns , i havnt heard much im bout to go through this thread and listen around though.

Linval Thompson had some nice productions too.

Prince Jammy made some bad ass dubs also.

These are some of the roots of so much music that came later, conceptually speaking..... Dub has about 40 years of history, seen?.

jah Thomas and the Roots Radics dubbed by King Tubby, - King Tubby's Hidden Treasure - fantastic album. And, it is really on the dubstep tip (although made in the 70s or so) with the huge kick and snare march.
Augustus Pablo's melodies are amazing, and whoever produced him did such an awesome job.
Burning Spear's dubs are good too, but more on the musical tip, less spacey. Amazing groove though
For some modern dub, check out the dub album of the Gorillaz first album, I think it was done by Space Ape - the production is just incredible, and it is earth shaking

the shit king tubby did with yabby u is great, along with the skatalites, augustus, blah blah blah... a lot of its reallly great.

go on youtube and search rastafari dub king tubby, that song has a great vocal on it. then go on to king tubbys myspace and listen to roots dub, roots dub is one of the best king tubby songs i have ever heard.

a lot of dub is boring and songs like every other dub, same with dubstep and any other genre, you just need to find the good shit.
