TROUBLE TUNE // LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL

Line up:

APPLEBLIM (DJ SET), BASS CLEF (LIVE) & GEIOM (LIVE) with special guests from the LONDON IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA

Supported by Matt Yee-King + Click Nilson, sound-visual installations by the Tilt Collective

SOUTHBANK CENTRE, The Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall, Sun 22nd Nov, 3–7 FREE

UK dubstep producers APPLEBLIM, BASS CLEF and GEIOM perform on the last day of London Jazz Festival, featuring special guest musicians from the LONDON IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA led by Shabaka Hutchings and Jason Yarde, featuring John Edwards, Kenichi, Matt Yee-King, and the legendary BJ Cole.

This event on the last day of the London Jazz Festival runs in conjunction with a headline performance by TORTOISE at Royal Festival Hall and will take place in the Clore Ballroom the largest ballroom space in the UK, transforming it into a huge dancefloor and meeting ground for dubstep and dancehall music, live improvisation and digital art.

APPLEBLIM is one of the most respected producers in UK dubstep, having just curated Volume 6 of Tempa’s Dubstep Allstars recordings, adding his mix to five previous editions by some of the biggest names in UK dubstep, including Kode9, N-Type, Youngsta and Hatcha. His name is synonymous with the likes of Peverelist, Joker, Gemmy, Guido, and Pinch, as one of the founders of the new ‘Bristol’ movement, much hailed by Mary-Anne Hobbs in her recent two-hour show for BBC Radio One, ‘Bristol: Rise Up’.

Osborne ran the legendary Skull Disco records with Shackleton from 2005-2008, recording music which crossed stylistic as well as geographic borders taking many influences from the Berlin-techno scene and Basic Channel, recording a mix called ‘Blood On My Hands’ by Ricardo Villalobos last year.

BASS CLEF (Ralph Cumbers) recently supported Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and is famous for his multi-instrumental approach to dubstep music, combining programmed 2-step tracks with flourishes of live trombone, theremin effects, drum pads and whistles.

To coincide with the release of his new album ‘May the Bridges I Burn Light the Way’, Cumbers will collaborate with special guests from the London Improvisers Orchestra including bassist John Edwards, Japanese multi-instrumentalist Kenichi, and legendary pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole, led and conducted by Shabaka Hutchings and Jason Yarde, two of the most exciting horn players in UK improvised music today.

GEIOM (Kamal Joory) improvises music for the dancefloor from his distinctive Atari-driven old school hardware, mixing the intricate with minimal and melodically involved textures. He has recently remixed Shackleton, D1, Clouds, Brackles and Shortstuff and has also been in the studio with Appleblim - the pair created the ‘Shreds’/’Flame Tree’ 12” which has been in great demand since its release in March 2009. He recently supported Magnetic Man (Skream and Benga) on their first UK tour. Joory’s track ‘Reminissin’ (featuring Marita), released last year, became a dubplate favourite, with remixes by Kode9, Shackleton and Skream.

This show will also feature two sets by electronics artist MATT YEE-KING with Swedish algorithmic dance innovator CLICK NILSON, who will demonstrate a form of music-making triggered by a computer software technique called ‘livecoding’.

With special sound-visual installations in the space curated by THE TILT COLLECTIVE.
