You cannot call yourself a DJ if you beat match properly. If you are getting paid for gigs and you can't beat match you're a tnuc. IMO.

First thing to learn about DJing dance music, of any form, is beat matching. You HAVE to learn this. Cutting, scratching, double drops or even a basic skill like eqing on/in time - none of these things are available to you properly if you can't beat match. I can't understand why anyone would even question it.

Looks like beatmaching is something you can or cannot do ?
beatmatching within 20 sek or 3 min makes a lot of difference to . . .
To me it was and still is the basics, but if you need the whole 12" (3-5 minutes)
to match up the tracks, i'd rather see you do something different
than letting us all wait for the next tune!
Unless you have an exeptionaly interesting tune going . . .

Selection, and then im talking how you present which part of what track,
is more important than beatmaching, but seriously why not both ?

If you're DJing dance music, I except you to be able to beatmatch properly.

if yr dj'ing dance music, i expect you to rock the dancefloor with your own style, and i could givefuckall about how you do it. if you show up with tin cans and a catcus needle for stylus, great-- get it moving. the ends justfy the means.

if your style involves beatmatching, then i expect you to do it well. if it involves ableton, i expect it to be done well and for you to push the envelope.

this is what I think is really important. Anyone can jump on & throw out bangers for an hour but knowing your tunes & being able to build a set takes much more

I have been djing for 15 years. Up until recently you had to beatmatch and beatmatch well if you wanted to play out. These days I am not as fussy over how tightly everything is mixed as long as you try and your selection is off the hook. I still cannot look at is logically about using ableton or traktor live. I still like manual beatmatching including hte human error. I have a few freinds that do it where they had dj'd with vinyl for years and no how to program etc but most of the people I see using those programs don't have a clue how to blend music together. I am seeing more and more where people just wake up one morning and decide they are going to be a dj and then are playing out 2 months later. It is bullshit. Back in the day you had to have knowledge of the game/music before you played out. Should still be that way imo.

That said I use Ableton sometimes for studio mixes, I am not 100% elitist prick but I dunno I just can't get into the auto-sync sets. There are exceptions for sure, just know your shit please.

Some dudes have knowledge of the game and the music, just that they hadn't been wanting to dj before or havent had the cash..

theres so many different ways to perform out there these days that i could care less. as long as whatever you do is good, its all good. I've seen bad vinyl sets, and i've seen crowds tear the walls off a club to an ableton/controller dj. whatever you wanna do, just make it good and make it your own.

I would rather hear a bad Ableton set then listen to the train pull into the station any day of the week. There is nothing worse then train wrecking dj's.. Beside's if you want "DJ" gig's it's all about making BIG TUNES!!!!!

When it comes to Dubstep, Beatmatching is fucking important. Its one of the essential skills that you should know IMO.
