I'd say it'd be Hip Hop and Electronic music mostly.

nah id say its probably indie rock (whatever the hell that is) and maybe classic re issues.

altho there is no doubt its Hiphop & EDM that kept vinyl alive.....


vinyl is gonna be fine. sales will keep going up. its just simply the best way to collect music.... nothing like a LP jacket for cover art... it stores nicely, its fun to hold & play and look at... very collectible.

I read somewhere a while back that Indie 7s were making a comeback so I could believe that - sleeve artwork can be bloody expensive but it does look good.

I do love CDJs with all their looping features and creative possibilities etc but I prefer the sound of vinyl and would love to play it more often especially for the decent gigs where the equipment does the decks justice (all too often the decks actually end up sounding worse than cdjs at the smaller gigs) and theres some space between the dancefloor and the decks so needles dont jump all over the place when the crowd gets lively.

Like many I can't afford to cut right now but hopefully if I get more gigs next year that will change....

While I can see that vinyl sales may have been increasing over time, I do not feel as though this means much for Dubstep overall. They would increase if the number of labels increases. When Dubstep got big the distributors signed up a lot of labels very quickly. Sales increased overall, but the number of units sold per label saw a net decrease I am willing to bet.

Labels should not be heartened by this news and assume vinyl is alive and well. How many Dubstep labels barcode their vinyl releases? How many Dubstep labels have charted a release in recent memory?

10 labels selling 1000 records each = 10,000
20 labels selling 500 records each = 10,000
50 labels selling 200 records each = 10,000

Include setup fees, cost of managing the label with the distributor, cost of pressing and the cost of knowing that 200 records is a net loss for both the label and the distributor--10,000 units sold would be a net loss. So they sign up 100 labels to make what 10 labels used to make.

Yes started spending over £70 on vinyl a month recently... damn if I saved up I would be able to get some technics/clothes... oh well gotta feed my addiction to the plastic.

God, I spend about that a week. I've bought about 100 pieces in the last 3 months. That's what having every record retailer's just arrived in stock thing in your RSS feeds does to your bank balance.

mate... I'm at college I get £30 EMA and I work 3 hours a week for between £15-22 (depending on tips)

£20 a week is a lot for me! for example last week I bought Scuba EP, Instra:mental & Al Tourretes on applepips and ASC on non plus. 32.50 so I had £12 for all my travel to college, booze etc... luckily I got £5 in tips on the sat so was ok. This week I got £0 tips and I'm going out Friday to a dub/reggae night and saturday to a techno/dubstep night... I could only afford one record!

do the vinyl purists understand music they like is made on electronic computers, then pressed onto a degradeable format?

Vinyl allows a Dj to just come in quick and lay down a hands on set without worrying about a laptop. I don't like bringing my lap top to the club. When a DJ brings the record box to the club everyone knows some serious sh*t might be going down. You know that Dj carried that vinyl all those years through the good times and the bad.

When i bring a box of new 12"s to the club to sell there's a certain amount of hype and competition to get that wax. I doubt I'd get the same results selling mp3s or Cds. There's a certain hands on, personal quality to vinyl that lends to trading, buying, selling, talking shit, smashing, sweating and on and on that is how we people use records. Can't say the same thing about other formats that 'don't degrade.' I like mp3s. they make getting music fast, cheap and ez. Problem is fast, cheap and easy rarely translates into a long term quality product. I won't say there's some damned good mp3s in my collection but sometimes I can't remember which hard drive its on.

Peace out all and everyone should be free to do what you want. Its a matter of style now. It doesnt matter what formatt you use. If you get away with slappin spoons on your knee and beat-boxing then more power to you. Me ? I use the 12s and 10s.
