I don't consider myself good yet

Re: How Long Did It Take You To Actually Get "Good" At Producing
every time i think i am getting good, i hear something that makes me realize im not really that good.
however, it probably took me about 7 years to get to what i consider 'acceptable'. although tbh about 3 or 4 of those years i was just pissing about and didn't really take it very seriously. or even listen to much electronic music.

The same (wo-oo-ooo-o) philosophy
I've said it's four hundred years;

I hope someone knows what im on about...

Trust me you have just began! Your work is immense, to expand your target audience maybe you should look into some deep "dubstep" ? You said your going to have your first physical release dropping in Feb ? Which songs are they going to be?Depone wrote:Its taken me 3-4 years to get to the standard im at now...

Back on topic, I've only been producing for a month and a half now so I know my tracks are pretty shit, still each time I feel I'm getting better. Maybe one day I'll be able to release a track that people would want to buy.

Re: How Long Did It Take You To Actually Get "Good" At Producing
About 5 years, but in the last two have started feeling a lot more confident in my sound and am having much more fun.
The learning curve once you get over the 'does it sound ok?' thing, and start to loosen up a bit with the production is pretty steep.

The worst thing to to (which i did) was to take a lot of songs on a cd, thinking that your shit hot and get the geeza behind the counter to play it...
Worst feedback ever (was around 2-3 years ago when i was producing Nu Skool Breaks).
Tore me apart

learning to sample and sequence on an mpc well 1 year
learning to sequence in ableton well 2 years
learning to mix to where i feel my mixes express what i want 1 year
now that i feel my mixing skills are on par with my sequencing skills its back to the drawing board to advance my knowledge of theory and melodic composition. im going to take piano lessons.

If you are looking to improve your theory knowledge the ABRSM theory grades are good, they go from grade 1 to 8, same as instrument grades. You can probably find a private theory teacher which can cost similar to instrument lessons but you will pick stuff up fast and you can specialise it to your needs (composition)jsills wrote:learning to sample and sequence on an mpc well 1 year
