Bad bwoy tune!! One of my favs. Loefah's on that one as well. With Darqwan and Loefah producing together you know it's going to have some serious subs!serox wrote:I have been trying with this for a while. I was wondering how Darqwan was making his bass. He has jungle snares so I thought it may be an old jungle trick!mks wrote:
Indeed, an 808 with a long decay will make a great sub, what I'm talking about is a short attack from a KICK drum grafted onto a sine which would be on top, not underneath. You can use an 808, 909 whatever, those just work good because they are already analog. It just has to match up with your sine in timbre, tune it, get it at the right level and play with the envelop settings on the attack. This is an old jungle trick. It will give you more of an attack on a usually attackless sine wave which will cut through the mix more. You don't want it to overpower your regular kick drum, but people will usually try to tune the bass to the kicks. Then re-sample. Try it. Layer more stuff on to it to give it more harmonics as other people have suggested.
I thought it was two 808 kicks. One standard and the other on top with dist?
Here is an example of it I think?

serox wrote:Recently I have been noticing my bass is all sub that you feel but can hardly be heard:( how do you go about making the sub stand out? You are going to say harmonics. To get a Distorted sounded is easy but I want to try and get a clean sounding sub that you can hear. I have tried adding another Sine a octave higher and also tried some Overdrive/Bitcrushing but it does not achieve the sound I am after, it is never clean and warm.
I think it is done with Sine waves but it could be square/triangle with a LP filter and I am just not hitting the right spot. Am I doing the right thing? Any suggestions would be good.
Below are some audio clips of well known tracks that have the clean sound I am after.

try using 3 sine wave with a 3 octave spread and low pass it at about 150-190

This track's bass has got a wide range, going from low to high to very low notes, but the subs are powerful throughout. Now I read somewhere that subs should be limited to give it consistency throughout the notes.
How exactly do I do that? I have a low passed, waveshaped sine which I think is pretty good, but when played, some notes tend to be louder/overpowering/clipping.
I have gone as far as sampling each note and manually leveling them. Would love to read up some tips from you guys.
Also, does this mean the higher notes and lower notes should be given different low pass settings?

Re: Sub bass you can feel and HEAR?
most dance music basses consist of more than one sound, or oscillator so if you're hearing a sound that has a lot of depth or tonal range its likely to be several.
layer oscillators up the octave with different LFOs, and envelopes and a simple bass becomes something a lot more interesting.

I found myself flicking back to this thread a few times myself, starting to get some really nice subs got one really close to 'widescreen'.martello wrote:Great thread. Subs - my weakest side.
This Pinch - Widescreen is a good example.
Thread bookmarked
I used to just use a sine cut from an 808 and that was it, some solid stuff in here
