good movies old and new to sample bits from?

Post by kp mike » Thu Nov 26, 2009 2:35 pm

any suggestions. nothing specific, just little bits of voice, sound fx, anything really. I've been collecting those free war-time film dvds you get in newspapers sometimes lol. Just can't be assed to sit through a movie I don't want to watch just so I can wait for a cool sample.

Sci-fi films are gold dust for sampling, even the DVD intro menus can provide great atmosphere/fx.

I haven't tried sampling old school ones actually as all my sci-fi films in my collection are 1980s+ and most of the the films that I sample are from the last 10 years.

I think you answered your own question. If you can't be bothered to dig for samples, you gets no samples.

Watch fuck loads of movies you DO want to watch with a notepad to jot down times or some sort of sound recorder (easy if you're watching on a PC).

There's a reason why expert samplers are respected....

I just now... ahem... obtained this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095217/ after reading that fsol sampled it some years back.

I love sampling from the History Channel as they always have stuff about the end of the world :)

Of course any sci-fi movie old or new as stated above and don't forget those lovely horrors movies as well.

I'm a patience person and I'll spend 4 or 5 hours at a time sampling stuff. Anything from voices to just random noises. Now for those of you who haven't thought about trying it, google video has a ton of videos, old movies, tv shows, and even old news reports posted there.

Movie trailers are normally a great place to find sampels - mainly dramatic FX and quotes.

I was sat in the cinema very recently watching an 18 (obviously the higher the rating, the more prone to horror style samples) and all the trailers involved big drops and dramatic vocal samples. Cuts out a lot of the mess and gives everyone what they want. I wrote down 3 or 4 of the films in my phone and delved into youtube when i got back.
