Side a 45 side b 33?

Post by oppaws » Wed Dec 02, 2009 7:25 pm

Hey, I bought Skream's album Skream on vinyl (3 LPs) and discovered that side a on each vinyl runs 45 rpm while side b runs 33. Is it always like this with dubstep 12-inchers? (I'm new to this stuff :P)

the tunes at 33 might be longer tracks.

33 is used for longer tracks or 2 tracks. If it's a 33, you will need to turn the gain up aswell.

Yeah I've got a couple of records that are 45 on the one side, 33 on the other. They're usually 33 if there's one incredibly long track or 2-3 normal tracks. It's annoying as I've gotta flick the belt over on my record player to switch between the two, but it only takes a couple of seconds.

Every a-side has 1 track, every b-side has 2 tracks. Now I understand. I kept wondering why every a-side was at 100 bpm while the b-sides where 140 :P Thank you for the answers :)

No,

Every A side with one track is 45 (apart from long tracks), every A side with 2 tracks is 33.

Every B side with one track is 45 (apart from long tracks), every B side with 2 tracks is 33.

The VAST majority of my records are 45 both sides and I own a few records (Clubroot LP, Burial & Four Tet - Moth to name a couple) which are 33 both sides. It comes down to what is actually on the record.

Also 100 and 140 are the BPM's and have no bearing on what speed the record plays at.

I meant on this specific Skream-record, side a has 1 track and side b has 2. This explains the difference in choice of rpm.

When you play a track with bpm 140 (approx.) on 33, though it's meant to be played in 45, the bpm you hear is 100 (approx.) - that's simple math :P. So when I played the a-sides, the bpm was 100 though it was supposed to be 140 and i started wondering.

I'm not that new to this stuff ;P

To be fair.. I have one or two records that have 2 tracks a side @ 45.. ex. Clouds - Elders

and I have a few that are 33 on one side and 45 on the other, and there's 1 tune a side..

point being... know your records and use your ear to judge what platter speed the tunes should be at if it's not printed on the label.. simplez

edit: not u specifically lojik but anyone in general thats getting wet on the decks

Venetian Snares - Miss Balaton is a 45, and I swear that track is 9 minutes long. Unless that's just the album version.
Still, good song, buy it.
Edit - Yeah, the track is almost 10 minutes long. How do they fit that one a single side at 45, but burial & four tet is 33 on both sides?
There's probably a science behind it, so someone asplain.

I'm fairly sure that they can fit more time on sides of a record by increasing the amount of grooves that the needle is going to travel through.
However, I think this can overall decrease the quality of the music you'll be hearing.
Pure guess by the way, think I read it somewhere.

out of my practice i can definitely say rpm means nothing and differs a lot from one record to another
