i listened to brand new kicks and the rolls on that are wicked. to get those rolls what you can do is put a snare on every 16th note in the bar and then just take the odd one out here and there. keep it either on the beat or on the 1/8th so that the timing doesn't go weird and then put a kick in places to fill it out.

it sounds like the sort of thing a drummer would do but its just on one note so sounds a lot different.
