it certainly is wicked. none of the actors are professionals, they're just ordinary folk from the favelas. if u like this then check out 'amores perros' by alejandro gonzales inarritu or 'tsotsi' by a south african guy. badbwoy films

those movies all don't seem to have anything in relation with city of god :?
la haine maybe seen in the context on youngsters getting pressed down by the world and their violent way to deal with it, but la haine was a flash forward, city of god is a flash back

Definitely one of my favorite movies. I just finally picked it up on dvd and watched it 2-3 times last week. Brazil is one crazy place...the separation of rich and poor is incredible...the rich pretty much live in constant fear of the poor down there. People will talk about a ghetto and say.."If you walk on the wrong side of the street, you're dead..." I don't know how often that holds true in most places...but that's the truth down in Brazil.

if you liked city of god make sure you check carandiru.
it's based on a true massacre that happened on the former biggest prison in são paulo and south america in which hundreds of prisoners were killed by military police.

Brilliant film, i especially liked the bit at the start where they have the 3 fucking amateur crims in the 60's, and how they started off Lil Ze and his antics. Watching it the second time I noticed that Benny's (the coolest kid in the slum) brother who is shot by the police while he's pushing the stalled car is actually played by the actors real life brother.

The whole thing about Benny being a cool guy and everything, I don't know, as nice as he is at the end, he was a bad boy in the beginning so his road to damascus seems a bit unrealistic.

Watched this film about 15 times. And every time I notice new things,
it's deeeep! The bonus DVD about violence in Rio is also top bang......
