serato and laptop dj's

Post by laurent__duval » Thu Dec 10, 2009 8:30 am

what quality do use when playing out. i.e what size is the average file you play. a friend of mine recently sent me a dub and its 128 MB, not kps, MB. for the one track that is. ive compressed it down to 15mb, which i think is fine but he's a bit offended. ive told him i think 128MB for the one track is a bit ridiculous.
i was wondering what size most of the files other people use are.

320's are hidden gems these days with being TRUE 320kbps files. You can only really tell a true 320 by having the file analyzed in a program that lets you see the actual WAVES of the file. These days its best to just buy the production unless given as a gift, trade, etc directly from the artist. Compressing a file is ridiculous. Your losing audio and quality.

and as far as dropping a 96kbps file. Thats humorous. Lets play some more files we ripped off internet radio.

.WAV FTW.

Its odd because some older tracks don't sound that different between 192-320k. Below that I would certainly not recommend though.

being a student, i cant afford a serato only laptop.
its filled with other music, files, and moutains of porn (lol??)

so i use 320kbps to save space, i playted a 128kbps but no one really noticed.
Deep, dark dungeon sounds.

Is it worth paying more and giving up more HD space for WAVs compared to 320 mp3s?

It's debatable. Some people claim to be able to hear the difference, others claim that it's bullshit.

ok real talk....

i have been a laptop dj now for over 5 years. Starting with final scratch 1. So, i have been involved from the start in trying to achieve the ultimate sound quality possible. And from my experience a 24bit wave or aiff is the way forward.
I will play 320kbps files, but if i play anything by my self, it remains in its original form when i play it out. 24bit aiff.
That file u got sent sounds like a 24bit audio file. in which case its gonna murk any 320kbps mp3 version. Simply because the bit depth before compression comes into it, is much higher.
If u mp3 compress a 24bit audio file it will most deffinately lose sound quality. Sometimes it even flutters the lower frequencies.
Maybe thats why ur friend was upset to find out u compressed it.

hope this info helps people understand about the files and formats and whats best to play.

kindest regards

seven

It depends on the system, and who your playing out for. If your DJing a house party, I dont think a bunch of wrecked teenagers are gunna notice at all, but if your playing on a huge rig and you drop a 128kps right after a .wav, your gunna hear and feel the difference.
