Listen, I like sharing dubstep with dudes too, otherwise I wouldn't be on this forum, but dancefloor politics limit me to maybe a glance in their direction, a nod of approval at the song playing, maybe a high five or something, then I go back to dancing with my girl.

It's also an evolutionary thing: the male form is, on the whole, larger in size than the female, so a dancefloor full of dudes looks intimidating to girls, because they might feel like they'll get bumped into, stepped on, etc, if they enter.

This is a UK thing tho, it does get retarded but I suppose it is inevitable that dubstep as a term will die off and all the fragments keep evolving into something else. I called DNB, jungle long after the meeting of the minds took place to remame the genre. In the US it is a bit different we make up genre names for fun it's kinda tongue in cheek but the UK boys seem to take it serious. It's just music. Who gives a fuck.

Interesting thing is I was listening to everything on Beatport the other night for shits and giggles. You think the subgenre wars get stupid in bass music try listening to minimal and techno and tell me the difference. There is a difference but it's so slight it makes it silly.

You make very good points, but in a way, subgenres to some extent help you find the sound you're looking for. You mentioned Beaport--being able to distinguish crackly Hotflush type tunes from Rusko smashers is well helpful. Bad example perhaps, but the Japanese did that with p0rn: splintered every conceivable thing into describable terms so people can find exactly what they're looking for... it has uses

The problem with it in my eyes is that like the beatport techno example is you sort of exclude the music that isn't either. I can't think of great analogy at the moment but it's like with DNB I used to like. I liked DNB not x or y subgenre but once the subgenre thing kinda took over dnb there was hardly anything left in the middle. So I gave up on it. I have made brostep and deep stuff but my favorite shit to make doesn't fit in either group very well get me? The best thing these download sites could do imo is to allow the labels to tag their tunes rather than pick from preset definitions. Problem with that is is it gets abused where people will tag tunes with everything so it will show up in more searches. Even with the abuse I would still like to see it, it would be better than what they have now and it would make it a lot easier to fine what you dig. I try to listen to as much as possible myself, you never know when you could find something brilliant where your head tells you to not even listen.

I always pretty much drew the line between dubstep and ruffnek diskotek... it seemed a pretty convenient way to seperate the distortion out, and gave homage to the old nights accross the pond whcih really helped start, and embody what i think should be, the scene. But, according to the legend as I got it, Ruffnek Diskotech is the first place they really shifted into that heavier, grittier, distorted, glitchy end... And, as catchy and legendary as the name is, it fit in mind as the subgenre, which Im now gathering people are calling brostep...

So, essentially, with as unique, and important as distorted shit is, cant we all agree on something better then brostep, becasue, as mentioned above, that might as well say fagstep or soemthing of the like... it pays no respect.

The problem about subgenring is, if you split the fanpower you get the half of crouds on partys n clubs, ergo the rooms feel emptyer and the people think, the genre is impoding. so the intrests for this kind of music goes back.
And the begining of the end could bee when the first promoter is going to make a so called *brostep party*. To giv sounds a name is ok, but to split or to hate other sounds, or to play on partys particulary the same voices could bee the beginning of the end.

UKG splitted in different directions and they where too much. please think twice before you all are dooing a big mistake. call the sounds by name, but don't subgenre it.

and the therm about finding sounds which i'm searching for, if you know the producers names you wil find the most things you are searching for. Agood dj is searching whit his ears not whit his eyes. and a good producer wil get atention anyway, when djs are playing his stuff.

Here's my take on it:

Dubstep developed through a small coterie of producers forming their own collective sound. It was made before there was a significant audience for it. (That doesn’t make all of it good, though.)

Brostep developed because dubstep blew up and DJs had to fill much larger dancefloors. It's a sound that's aiming to please a specific audience. (That doesn't make all of it bad, though.)

Personally, I’ll play anything that moves the body while engaging the mind. Unfortunately, most music – not just brostep or dubstep... most music – appeals to mind or body, not both. (And you know why? Because it’s a lot easier to make.)

My point was basically that if you're going out looking for girls to dance with it's not easy because the ratio of males on the dancefloor is always higher... Yeah I gotcha. Doesn't always seem to be the case though but like I say I am sure it is different from region to region but there is definitely always more poles than holes in the club but most guys you will never see on the dancefloor. Girls are more likely to kick it and it has a kind of evening effect sometimes.
