Braindance, IDM, Intelligent Dance Music

Post by whitelight » Thu Dec 24, 2009 1:08 am

For those who are new to the vast array of EDM genres, there's been a genre that always had the "looking forward" goal in mind. Definitely not saying IDM is the only genre with intellectual properties, but it definitely is one of it's main aspirations, instead of making the dancefloor it's priority. IDM doesn't define itself by strict musical rules. We usually consider IDM any artist ready to break SOME rules in a more or less experimental way. Artists usually travel between different hybrid genres wich makes it probably the most vague genre to define. Drill n' Bass, Ambient, Techno and Acid are the most common but certainly not the only ones.

Some examples may be the well established artists Aphex Twin, Autechre and Squarepusher. I'd add Venetian Snares, but he's normally considered more Breakcore than IDM.

Other artists worth looking that are really pushing boundaries of electronic music right now and are some of my favorites, Flashbulb, Clark and Wisp.

Just tought there was no way I was the only fan on this forum.

I'm still, always, looking for more brain-melting music. Share your toughts and suggestions.

Rephlex Records now has a digital store. There are exclusive AFX remixes.

Also, IDM is a stupid genre name.

Well...pretty much every genre name is "stupid".

IDM music isn't necessary intelligent.

Trance doesn't necessary put you in a trance.

Dubstep...

whatever the case may be you guys should check out all of the material coming out on Tympanik Audio right now. if you're into the rhythmic noise/Gridlock/hymen sound then the material there is for you.

Let me introduce you to Clark.

Jon Hopkins

And Richard Devine

Sure, nothing is ever entierely new. You can definitely hear lots of Autechre's influence in Devine's music, or Telefon Tel Aviv in Jon Hopkins...I wouldn't consider Telefon Tel Aviv to be an oldie, also...

Well..all depends on what you consider to be an oldie.

Oh yeah...Aphex Twin's last project (unconfirmed that it's in fact RDJ)

I would also class some artists as IDM/Dubstep, like Tipper, Spoonbill, Vibesquad, Boxcutter...and those are definitely bringing something new.

I don't know your definition of "looking forward" but you can't ask an artist to reinvente music as a whole....Nobody ever did that. Not Aphex Twin, not Autechre, nor Rusko (lol).

you dont have to get all offended cause someone questioned your thread lol. those videos you put up were just old, besides that squarepusher one. your intro, to me, just seemed like you were saying, hey, this is looking forward type music. i was just saying i knew that awhile ago. anyone who listens to electronica and DOESN'T know who these artists are needs to start studying.! respect. :t:

Sure. Didn't reallly get "offended". More like I know I posted older videos in order to present the genre to people who may not know it. Thing is that I don't think that IDM died with the 90's.

Personally knew all these artists before I knew the term "IDM"...actually, I've been introduced to electronic music by Boards of Canada's Campfire Headphase, and my first electronic music night was an Autechre show. I'm kinda sad I didn't actually understand more their music when I saw them...wish I'll have another chance eventually.
