Best Reverb Plugins

Currently using Logic Spacedesigner -- is there something better? Do hardware Verbs still out-perform software? Recommend some?

Space Designer is really good.

Most people would consider Alti Reverb & Sonnox Oxford Reverb top of the software game.

And yeah hardware reverb units still put software ones to shame. I've been using a Lexicon hardware reverb in Uni and its definitely better then any software reverb I've used but your talking about over £1000 even on Ebay for the PCM-81 lexicon model. And even then you've only got two reverb channels.

hey, dont have much experience with space designer is it an impluse reverb program? If not i would recommend one of them

Space Designer is an Impulse Response reverb and the new logic 9 has got a shit load of IM's to go with it including a new collection of freaked out warped ones, really good for strange effects.

Which settings do you find the most useful? Plate? Spring? Indoor? Outdoor? I can't find a "good" one that goes with anything, I guess that's my main frustration.

Plate and Springs for drums, then the rest depends maybe a a big hall for a pad or whatever.

Make sure to EQ the reverb (theres one built into SpaceDesigner) to suit what your doing, also adjust the Decay time to fit into your track, adding a bit of predelay can give a nice breathy reverb on the snare eg. the snare hits there is a very short gap and then the reverb kicks in.

Its solid plugin, Jack Sparrow swears by it.

If your sending something shit into a reverb its going to sound shit coming out as well, its good but its not a miracle worker

if we're talking software, altiverb is really nice. aether is quite cool, a bit different to most SW verbs ive used but quite capable of some nice results, and the reaktor spring tank is still the best software spring emulation ive heard. hardware does sound good, my lexicon thing is quite nice, just tends to sit a bit nicer and sounds a bit more realistic than most SW. convolution sounds pretty good to my ears, so i wouldn't bother with a hardware unit unless you wanna get a really high end one.

spend an hour with space designer and you'll never, ever, ever go back to anything else*. seriously. it's that good that it deserves your investing a little effort in it.

i like some of the 2-or-so second plates for general verbiness. some of the 1-1.6 second chambers and halls are great for drums. the odd verbs are... odd. sometimes perfect, often not.

none of the spring verb samples do it for me but... there's at least 2 other ways in logic 9 (1 in logic 8 ) to get wicked spring reverb sounds

*ok maybe if you had a nice $25,000 lexicon or similarly-spendy bricasti around, you'd put in the effort to learn it. but in general, the current state of quality verb plug ins absolutely destroys your basic sub-$500 box that's out. The only affordable bit of hardware verb i've heard recently that i've liked is the korg rumour, which come to think of it, i don't think they even make any more

I don't even know what the high-end hardware reverb units are like these days but they are still digital I don't really see how they are so much better than a nice vst. TBH this thread is the first time I have even heard anyone claim hardware is better in that respect. Maybe I don't get out enough

Would love to check out space designer but I don't have a Mac. I use the waves stuff, they have an IR unit too. Or whatever verb I happen to randomly pick. I can usually set it to where I like it. It always good to have a unit with a shit ton of good presets. I don't like to spend a lot of time creating verb patches from scratch. Find something ballpark and make a few tweaks.

I tried this out a few days ago and thought it was surprisingly terrible, considering I love Nitro and Vintage Warmer. I wish I could like it, since it is really easy to use, but I couldn't make it sound good no matter how hard I tried.


I still haven't found a reverb as good as the advanced reverb unit in Reason. I've tried a bunch and still haven't settled on anything. Epicverb is probably my favorite so far. I just downloaded Glaceverb and will give that a go.

Its down to been able to handle better convolution algorithms because it doesn't have to rely on your PC for memory.

But I ain't knockin software reverbs, cause at the end of the day its only the high end hardware units that are better and if I was going to spend a ridiculously amount of money on a Reverb Unit I just get some high end software instead anyway.

Lets not forget sometimes the cheaper gear will have more character we aren't mixing traditional or folk music were not really aiming for a natural sound.
I've got an old 2nd hand Boss SE-70 got it off Ebay for £130 and its class, its digital multiFX box but it actually has an analogue distortion circuit. And if you wanna know what it sound like stick on Prodigys 'Phat on the Land', the majority of Reverb, Delay and Distortion came from this model. Liam Howlett has 4 of em.
The reverb isn't natural sounding but its got its own character.

Glaceverb is awesome I think. Outdoorverb is also cool but not sooo useful - both free.
