4gb of ram, i dont see why it wouldn't be able to handle it.

well cos i've only got a core 2duo 2.1ghz processor, which seems kinda slow dontcha think? Would more ram cover up for lack of cpu speed?

Vista is known for it's CPU raping super powers, i'm a (very) happy windows 7 user, and i'd have to say yes, with a good sound card, the switch to windows 7 and an added 2GB of RAM you'll definitely be seeing some nice results...

A 2.1Ghz core2duo is actually not too bad. It's not all about GHz ya know. :)

To be honest with you, I used to read questions like this and hate all the people replying with "get a macbook", then i finally saved up and bought a macbook pro and realise now that they were right. Ableton used to crash on me so often that I was too scared to play out live, but have never had the slightest problem with the mac. Confidence in your setup = more gigs = more money, and soon enough your Macbook will have paid for itself.

This alone has tempted me to get a macbook. I too am looking for an upgrade on my current piece of turd of a laptop.
I;ve started using Ableton Live and have bounced all my loops and beats from my productions to wav and imported into projects, ready to galvanize with a soon to be purchased Akai Apc40!
I;ve been looking around at different windows based laptops, but there is always something that nags me about each one. My brother has a Macbook and just the sound of typing on the keyboard makes me wet. The fact that you say "soon enough [the] Macbook will have paid for itself", has eradicated the whole price issue.

hmmm, to think that a few months ago I hated anything that Apple made and feared Ableton users. I suppose sometimes there is a right time to jump on board the band wagon.

I've read & re-read those computer specs.. and I am trying to figure out what the problem is.

I've been playing live for 5 years... for the first 2 years, I used a G3 iBook - 800mHz with 512MB ram. Never had a single problem, not a single crash, not a single hiccup. Now I am using a Macbook with pretty similar specs to what you have listed - again, not only do I have no problems at all for playing live, but it also is my production computer... and I can use as many VSTs and softsynths as I want without any issues.
