Version 9.0.3 is the newest version which they just released not to long a go.

Its safe to install different versions of FL as long as you create a different folder say image line/ FL Studio8 image line/ FL Studio 9 and so on. When installing it be sure to turn off "clear settings" if you already have your sample folders and vsts mapped out.

everything is better in FL9 than previous versions.. except the lack of "last tweaked parameter"

Not really. The last tweaked parameter being moved to a different menu is one of the only major things. Good to check the change log and version history whenever a new version comes out.

Functionally, there isn't much of a difference going from version 4 to 9 other than slight additions, improvements and bug fixes. 4 was the first version to let you use audio clips in the playlist, and from there they slowly moved to primarily using audio clips and clip tracks in the playlist instead of block patterns.

One thing that I dislike about upgrading is that it creates a new install every time by default instead of simply upgrading. Good if you want to run multiple versions, but I dislike it because:
1) I have to manage different installs and remember what version certain songs are in. Not bad if you maintain separate directories with all your song sources as zipped projects, but I have a lot of flp files that are mostly incomplete songs that are just in the data folders of each install.
2) You have to rescan VST directories or check off plugins every time for it to pick up non-FL plugins. I don't use a lot of plugins, but it's annoying having to check them off again every time after an upgrade for them to show in my plugins listings. Even keeping the same VST directory, you still have to do this, unless I'm missing something.
3) All of these additional installs eat up more HDD space.

I'm sure I could install to the same directory every time. Old project files are compatible with new versions for the most part, but I'd probably still have to check off VSTs still.
