As Ruffage moves into its last year, we’re very happy to welcome the Godfather of the Dubstep scene, Hatcha, to play a very special 2004 set. It’s no exaggeration to say that without Hatcha dubstep probably wouldn’t have survived long enough to blow up into the well-established worldwide scene it is today. In many ways, 2004 was dubstep’s breakthrough year when the music made a massive step up. Expect to hear some of the sickest, rarest dubs from Mala, Skream, Benga, Loefah and Coki. Joining him on the evening will be his perennial MC, Crazy D. A legend in his own right, it’s difficult to imagine dubstep at any point over the last six or so years, without Crazy’s distinctive vocals. Needless to say, we’ve not been this excited about our headliner in a very long time.
Alongside two stone-cold legends of the scene, we have a producer/DJ who’s completely killed it in 2009, Untold. From the 8-bar grime headfuckery of Anaconda and the jittery, kaleidoscopic techno of I Can’t Stop This Feeling to the driving 90s US house vibes of Gonna Work Out Fine EP and next-level remixes for Moderat, Toasty and Ramadanman, Untold has become one of the most talked about electronic music artists of the past twelve months. He’s come a long way since his Ruffage debut 18 months ago.
Another DJ who’s had a big 2009 is Ruffage and Hessle Audio co-founder, Ben UFO. Finally getting richly deserved recognition as one of the top boys (alongside Oneman, Brackles, Bok Bok and Jackmaster) in that fruitful intersection of dubstep, grime, garage, funky and house which has increasingly come to dominate the cutting edge of UK bass music. Look forward to a completely next hype badman birthday set from the Ruffage chief.
Ruffage residents Jangle and Badga Tek round off proceedings with a special b2b set, and Subdub resident MC Farze will be keeping the dance bubbling until the early hours. All this powered by a weighty, fresh Funktion One install, which further cements Wire as the best club of its size in Leeds. See you down the front.
