You can download a fully functional demo of either 7 or 8 from the Ableton website...so try that, first. If it still doesn't work, then you know it's not your pirated copy. If it does, then it looks like you'll need to buy it.

well i just tried to download the demo version of 8 and i got an I/D error saying something about media corruption.... so hopefully im not *edit* to hard and i can figure this out lol.

I'd think that if you combined it with something like the novation nocturn, you'd have all of the functionality you need

Nocturn - $60 (ebay)
Total $310. Not bad for a hardware setup

Nice wee setup for DJ sets, but you'll need to add another £20 on for the Automap Pro upgrade so that you can run the Launchpad and Nocturn at the same time. While you're at it though, if you have an iPhone you can get the Automap app for £1.79, and then mystify people at parties by keeping the mix going even when you go for a slash.

Nice lil set up there! I've never tried the Nocturn as I've been using the Numark Total Control which gives me everything I need for DJing, but might give the Nocturn a go if I get some spare cash!
