DJ in serious need of some help!!

Post by sillyfroob » Thu Jan 07, 2010 10:24 pm

I have been looking to buy preferably a pair of decks with a mixer off ebay BUT when I attempt to google for reviews of the decks I've found, unfortunately the majority come back with "you'd be better off with Technics" or "they aren't as good as Vestax". I already know this but unfortunately that is much higher than what i can afford.
I have trawled through Gemini after Gemini, Kam, Stanton, Numark, Citronic and all the way back again.

Can anyone suggest any "middle of the range" decks preferably with a torque stronger than an elderly lady attempting a bar fight with a cage fighter. Or in other words, like 1.6 or upwards. I learnt to DJ on my mates Numark TTX1 (the blue screen, very torquey beauties) but unfortunately I lack their spending power...
Aside from that, I desperately need any enlightenment that any experienced DJ can give about what makes/models to go for/avoid.

Cheers all,
Shane

I managed to pick up 2 Numark TT1650s and DM1002MK2 mixer and an amp from ebay for £100 and a 30 minute drive, they're holding up very well as I learn, but I still too want to upgrade up to T12s. If you do carry on, you will eventually want to upgrade to something better.

Edit: out of interest how do you DJ other people's tracks (ie full tracks not stems/channels/synths) on Ableton.

Midrange decks are ok in my opinion. They are cheap. They have poor torque, well my soundlabs do anyway and they make dropping tunes a little bit harder, but you can still mix fine with them.
Impossible to scratch on though. That's the main reason why I want some Technics, and so that when I get a gig in a club then it won't be such a different setup.

atsushita's Technics division introduced the first commercially successful direct drive platter, model SP10, in 1969 and it was replaced by the Technics SL-1200 turntable, in 1972. Its updated model, SL-1200MK2, released in 1978, had a stronger motor, a convenient pitch control slider for beatmatching and a stylus illuminator, which made it the long standing favourite among disc jockeys (see "Turntablism"). By the beginnings of the 80s, lowering of costs in microcontroller electronics made Direct-Drive turntables more affordable....

before 69 all turntables were belt driven

I got a pair of used Techs for 300 squid. If you're paying any less than that for gear don't even bother.

I got a pair of Technics 1210s and 2 mixers (No idea why the guy had two) for £350.

If you don't take it up, you can always resell them easy, at the same value.

I don't understand this view? If you don't have enough money or you aren't sure that Djing is your thing then I think that cheaper decks are good. When deciding to buy decks, I had the choice of a pair of technics from Felixgash for £300 or soundlab decks, mixer, amp, speakers and a box of 140 records (classic jungle, ukg and grime) all for £130. I am very happy with the decision that I made. I can always save up to get technics.

one of the effects of the credit crunch is people selling off their decks for dirt cheap so like people have said above, keep an eye out and you should be able to get a bargain off some unlucky bastard forced to sell their decks

and yeah... get technics unless you want to waste some money on shit decks, and then inevitably have to spend a lot on technics as well further down the line
