Hello,
I'm thinking of buying new monitor speakers.

My budget is around 300 pounds
I want a small, active, 'best I can get for the price' monitors.

Which speakers do you recommend?
Where to buy in London???
What stores do you recomend? 2nd hand ones?

That is a little over 500 in US dollars.

hmm, I would get a pair of Event TR8's or save a little longer and get a pair of Mackie hr624 and then save a little more after you get those and get a sub.

The TR8's will treat you ok for now though. One thing I have learned in my time of buying lots of gear over the last 5 years is this. When you buy in baby steps you end up spending WAY more money than you need to. hears the deal. lets say you spend 50 quid on a pair of shit computer speakers and you get into production. You decide to get a better pair and drop 300 after that. then you are trucking along and figure out that your monitors are not giving you a good mix, hey they were only 300 pounds what do you expect. then you go buy a set for 600 and a sub for 200. You have just spent 1150 fucking pounds on speakers ! ! ! !

What i mean is, if you are really into making music, save a little more and DON'T babystep your pockets empty. Even if you quit making tunes you still have a nice set of powered speakers to listen to music on your PC.

if you want bang for buck get fostex pm1s,

quite a few people in dubstep use them and the sound is similair to a PA in terms of low mids, easy to spot clashing bass (yes i know the freq response is not really sub but they seem to work well)

myself i have some Truth b2031 and i think theyre ok, but it's more like i've gotten to know their sound .....

im thinking of getting something better as well .. save a bit more and get something proper ...

but if we wanna talk fantasy .... those Eggleston Works .... :shock:

well if fantasy is on the table then I would have to go for a pair of Dynaudio BM15a. They are not the most accurate ones on the market but the have near perfect bass response for our type of music. a pair of those and your neighbors will hate you for ever. no joke.

but with monitors that big you need to have a large room that is set up well for handling them. lots of auralex foam and those bass traps.

Lots of active monitors on there. I've just got a pair of Active Tannoy Reveals and would highly recommend them. Good bass and very clear mids/high. I got mine for Â£229 so cheap but v high quality.

i've got the Genelec 1031's they are very crisp sounding and very good for mixing & mastering,and give you 115 db spl at 1m distance which is REALLY LOUD,they are almost too crisp to enjoy your daily music,but you hear exactly what's happening in your music,they kind of seperate all the different frequency spectrums...and they look nice also

I've got a pair of Truths too, not too bad at all, clean and flat response, but you do need to know that they don't show all the bass that's really down there. Better that way around than overemphasising frequencies that aren't really there which is the danger of monitors that are made to sound impressive rather than accurate imo.

i've got alesis m1 active mk2 and i like their sound - bass is deep - and if u turn the volume knobs to max they are loud as hell

Yea, we have a pair of M1's in our media studio, they are a bit of an offender in the "impressive but not accurate" department with that upfront bass IMO. But yea, surely loud enough if that's what you need.

the thing about Truth's are that they are a complete cheaper clone of the 824 mackie's...the only difference is that the behringers use cheaper materials. the problem that arise from this is that the monitors have a tendency to overheat and even catch on fire in some instances. thats the bad news. the good news is that they have an auto shutoff/on feature, thats activated whenever a signal is sent from an output...they usually shut off in like 5 mins for me. the sound reproduction on them is great for the price you pay for them. i like the sound of events, lots of people use em..
i think they have a problem with clarity in the upper high end spectrum..things start to sound muddy when theyre gained up a little..but they have great bass response. above all, my advise would be to buy monitors with 8" cones, because its pretty much useless to make dubstep on anything smaller..ur not gonna hear the subtone. that, and get monitor stands..vibration and placement are very key to how things will sound to you when you're sitting.

personally i'll never buy anything made by behringer - quality of the parts used is so fuckin low that even the ultra-low-end price is not going to make me to buy behringer shit

a mix engineer i used to know had a proper hatred for tannoy reveals, said they fucked up some of his best sessions and they had to completely rework (that bass emphasis problem again) same with alesis.

any dynaudio speaker is amazing but for that kind of money they're only for people who can afford to set them up pro in an acoustically tested room as you say dleted.

Personally i wouldn't trust turnkey or digi village as far as i can throw them, studiospares all the way!

I recomend the Event TR8's. I have not heard them yet, but I do own the PS8's which, I believe is the same monitor with a different name(older version) Events have a pretty flat response(the PS8's atleast).

Like Signal said, monitors with 8" speakers are the way to go for bass heavy music.

I know some people use smaller monitors with a sub, but I don't like the variable that brings in.

For that money, Fostex PM1's, standard. Nothing else is as accurate for the money. (Now that the Tannoy Reveal Actives are discontinued). I know a lot of people who use them. Pm me if you would like a good price mate...

He is right u knw bad ass monitors i have to say, and he will sort u out too.
I knw plenty of producers with the PM1's n have not heard any complaints wot so eva.
