tune ID (old garage?)
garage ID, click here
Garage tune from Roll Deep & Ruff Sqwad's xmas set on Rinse FM. Anyone know it? I know it's a bit of a long shot, as the tune doesn't really have any hooks or other things that makes it very recognizeable. I'll give it a go anyway though, as that beat is just so irresistibly funky.

It's a good tune, I think it's by a known producer as opposed to being a white label affair. Know that's not much help to you but I think it was from around 2001.
Do you know about Shazaam. It's a number you call from your mobile and you put the phone very close to the speakers and turn the sound up really really loud. The call will stop after 20 seconds and then it will give you a message back saying what the tune is, or if doesn't know what it is it'll say 'shazaam couldn't tag that track'.
The chances are it'll not know what that track is but it's worth a try for 30p or so (it cost less if it can't come up with an answer, and you would be surprised some of the obscure tracks ithas named for me). the number is 2580. Select the 20 seconds of the track that identify it most, ie the bassline. Hopefully the MC's and the distortion from your PC speakers picking up the phone noise wont confuse it.
But yeah, I really want to know what that track is myself, cause I'm sure it's one of the better known garage producers and not some one hit wonder.

I THINK I HAVE THE ID
I tried the Shazaam thing and it said that the track was called 'Darker' and it was by a producer called Proflex. Now, shazaam has made mistakes before, but I'm willing to accept it's telling the truth this time. If you go to Discogs you can see that it hasn't had a recorded release (ie. probably was a white label), but it is (assuming it's the right track) availiable on a compilation mix CD.

I've looked over the internet for this tune on vinyl but havent found it, so you're best bet is to buy the CD off the German fella on discogs for a tenner or see if you can get it elsewhere for cheaper.

What can I say, I was a greedy fucker and nabbed that Ayia Napa Cd for £3.75 on Amazon before I posted the id. The compo itself seems to be a mixture of really obvious 2000/01 era Garage tunes (back when it was a legal perogative that every mix Cd had to have 45% of the same tunes as all the other Garage ones) and a few obscure ones on the 2nd Cd that I guess were never given a full release (ie. were cheap as fuck to licence.
Of course come next week it'll arrive in the post and it'll turn out that shazaam was wrong. That's what I fucking hate about Garage/Dubstep. In other genres the rare stuff is availiable, you just have to pay a lot of money for it. But how many record detectives concentrate on bizarre white labels which were only pressed up in 50 copies.
It's not that different today either. fail to buy your favourite Dubstep tune within 3 months of it's release and you'll probably never have the chance to buy it for the rest of your life.

Hah, talk about buying on impulse. Anyway, if you could just post here again if the ID is incorrect, that'd be much appreciated.owengriffiths wrote:What can I say, I was a greedy fucker and nabbed that Ayia Napa Cd for £3.75 on Amazon before I posted the id. Alright will do.
Problem is I paid for it by check and given that I posted it tonight, chances are I will recieve it sometime in the week starting 22nd January. I would have used Paypal but a few days ago the stnuc charged me a 15 quid service charge for using my new cash card which replaced the old one. The AC no & sort codes are the same but the 12 digit numbers aren't, so I can't reregister the card because it only asks for the first 2 (it stupidly assumes my new card is the same as the old one) and for this reason they are charging me this extortionate fee for using what is in effect a bank transfer which is not credit, it's my fucking money. I assume there are thousands of people in the same boat with me, all this chip & pin shite, but Paypal are such a big company the chances of straightening this out are slim to none.
Anyway, I'll bookmark this thread and tell you in a fortnight or so whether its the right tune.

Ok, safe. Actually not the one I was thinking ofSand Leaper wrote:The person who posted before you in this thread.owengriffiths wrote:what's furiouz?
I guess that settles it then. The tune I'm after is Proflex - Darker. Typical that the chance of getting a hold of a full version is slim. Cheers for the help everyone.

That's the thing though Furiouz, Shazaam gave me a wrong answer once before (whereas usually it just tell you it doesn't know what it is), so it could be this proflex track is completely wrong. But I'm hoping it is seeming as I've just bought this CD.

Shazam was right, it is Proflex- Darker
Bought that CD and it proved shazam right. The tune was written by a certain T. Swift. It was licensed from Fuse, presumably not a real record label just a white. Published by Wired publishing. Tried very hard on Discogs & HTFR and Google to find out anything about these people & companies and came up with Scottish Football Association.
T. Swift was a psychedelic rock band frontman in the 60's, and they used to have the word Garage Rock back then, which will fuck up your google search, even if you put in UKG instead.
Fuse is a German Trance label. Wired publishing probably didn't even exist, and any searches for it will come up with the American music magazine Wired.
The Proflex tune is pretty good. You only get a minute and a half of it uninterupted without before you have the next tune coming in and the previous track fading out. It starts off with 8 bars of the first bassline and then goes into the second one, so there's not much sense of a build up. You could re-edit this track to extend it but you'd never have the drum intro. I reckon someone should see if this track is availiable on Limewire.
The 2nd CD itself isn't too bad, mixed by Mark Ruff Ryder. it's pretty dark for a bargain bin release, but then it's the obscure white labels and unreleased stuff that is cheap to licence anyway (check amazon or something for tracklistings). I'd reccomend it to people who really want their Proflex track, but who also quite like their garage stuff. The first CD (which I haven't listened to) seems to be a mix of predictable chart fodder and obscure, ie. cheap tracks.

There was a Fuze/Fuse who did some garage tunes a while back, there were a few bits and pieces up on Juno, but they seem to have been nabbed by the archive hunters. He did some stuff with JJ Louis, more the darker, harder business from what I can remember. Might be worth having a look at discogs for those boys and you might do OK - might not be the same geezer but worth a look I reckon.
Hmm....
