Moving away from a certain type of tunes

Post by Mutiny » Mon Jan 18, 2010 9:14 pm

Ive just realised that since i started DJing i have completely stopped listening to jump up style tunes while at home or whatever, i mean obviously they still have their place and i use them alot in my sets. But generally while on my computer or wherever i never find my self listening to them anymore, ive just kind of drifted away, in to the mellower and deeper synkro, jus wan and stuff like that. Logiks free EP is a great example, it kinda feels like im moving back into good music again, away from the repetative noisy tunes and into the deeper side of things (although my love for bangers completely and utterly remains while im DJing or when im out at a club).

I'll still occasionally listen to stuff like 'Froggy style' by the widdler when by myself as its a pretty interesting track, but ive tottally moved away from stuff like 'the future' by Trolley snatcha etc.

So yeah, is it just me or is this a natural development?

Oh and also, i dunno if anyone has this already but you should check out these visualizers for when your stoned or just chilling.. the 'gforce' one is best in my opinion, pretty cool stuff,

Edit: here's a link if anybody is interested http://www.soundspectrum.com/

ye you definatly have a point, i used to hop in the shower blaring out some rusko business but i look now and my playlists are all chilled

im liking the james blake untold remix, its kinda halfway in my opinion, can listen to it to death at home and still play it out and not get bored

I love a good jump up set if I'm in the right mood but I rarely go for that sort of stuff at home. To be honest, wobble tunes seem made for a big system and a communal audience of people dancing, hearing it on a single sub at home or earphones in the street just doesn't feel right.

There are exceptions mind but they're always tunes that have other stuff going for them (Nero productions, Rusko's Jahova, Sweet Shop, etc). I can't say I listen to mostly meditative material because I'm all over the place but for a tune to get purchased it needs to have some unique element that pushes it past the default boundaries of a sub-genre.

Yeah exactly! thats definatly really good way to put it

Like i said im really into synkros new stuff, logiks ep is great, jus wan's 'azure' ep is pure niceness. Also liking TKR's remix of twisted's 'Just look'.

what are you into at the moment?

also check out, 'Bass is Maternal' & 'U Dub' by Smith & Mighty ft. John Lawrence, different but in a good way. Also cant wait for Widdlers new album, some pretty chill stuff on their too

Cheers! I'm gonna check those out, I actually don't have any of those releases and my collection could def use some new blood.

Some of what I've been listening to recently which will probably end up in my next mix...

Ikonika - Smuck (I love how her drum programming shouldn't work but somehow does. It takes a lot to get me into beats that veer so close to 4 on the floor rhythms but it all comes together and the synths are lovely)

Debruit - Nigeria What!?! (Afrobeat inspired 140 BPM madness. I would love if this kick started a trend if only to shut down the lame Afropop inspired indie rock I've heard recently)

Taz Buckfaster - Half Man Half Trout (mixes in wobbles with "Purple" style synths. Great melody)

Dave Nada - Drummer's Rock (Not really Dubstep but I'm incorporating it into my next mix, awesome record built around drums and crowd noise that adds a kick to a lot of slower half-step tracks)

Royal T - Beat Fighter (Grime instrumental that samples Street Fighter II. I've heard tons of producers rock that sample set but this may be the best attempt yet)

Engine Earz - Kaliyuga (Middle-Eastern tune with some great samples that sound kinda "gypsy" Indian. There's some LFO wobbling on the drop but it's def not the central element)

Matty G - The Scratch, The Bass (Big 808s and scratching on this one, reminds me of early Mantronix as filtered through Dubstep)

Joker - City Hopper (needs no commentary)

Rox - No Turning Back Guido Remix (I rarely go for R&B, but this is good even if the vocals are a bit too Divaish for my sensibilities)

I'm also a big Reggae/Dub/Dancehall fan so guys like G31, Mungo's Hi-fi, Tryptomatik and Herbalist get a lot of burn as well.

Yeah, I paid for it ;]
Gotta tip for you to make the trial a bit more awesome - was using that for a while, but I got tired of the lack of options (even though they're a lot more than iTunes) - search for the earth, space, and beyond folder in WhiteCap (whitecap ->home ->background images->earth, etc). Once there, drag and drop whatever images you'd like to see as the background behind the visuals. Enjoy

Mutiny: Cheers on Synkro, just checked his myspace, loved the tunes and realised he's playing my town in a few weeks! On a thursday in a venue I'm sort of iffy about mind you, but what's a couple of students and a rough morning at work between a man and his dubs?

Also, I was wondering if you could point me towards Logik's stuff, google isn't providing.

EDIT: nevermind, found the thread :D

Same thing happened with me really, generally like the deeper side. However I was listening to rinse recently and there was quite a lot of jump up and I actually quite enjoyed a lot of it. I think it might have something to do with the fact that a lot of jump up isn't that great and made obviously to get people moving in clubs. But there is some heavy stuff which is really quite cool :e:

I've found this as well, not to say that i don't like the jump up style but i've found myself listening to, and buying more and more tunes towards the style of untold, guido, geiom etc :)

i like it all i guess it just depends how i feel but i feel you on bumping different sounding tunes, lately ive been getting into more atmospheric dub tunes such as dj madd and von d, maybe its a natural progression??

I got into dubstep through all the filthy wobble stuff like excision/16bit but nowadays I'm not listening much that kind of stuff. It's not that I hate it "only cos it's wobble" but I dno, there's just better tunes. And when I'm in the mood I still listen it. So generally I'm moving away from it.

i still listen to trolley snatcha, and skream bangers from time to time.....

although im not really into the new wave of bangers....aside from doctor p......i dont care much for em.....these newer artists are trying a little too hard imo

their are certain tracks...ie ( trolley snatcha - scattah.....and, skream - wibbela and metalick) that i can't stop listening to just for the fact of how quality they are

but im more into silkie and the new reso ep now....chill tunes when im doing hw etc are the best

however in the club i do prefer a badman set really

True, i mean to be honest i go out to have a mint time, although a deep set is very appretiated while extremely stoned or towards the end of the night when your winding down.
