UFO, it seems to me that you have a problem with people categorising their OWN music. Why is it so important to you that they should just call their music dub-step as supposed to liquid dub-step and so on?
Isn't this border line facism?
We as producers are part of this scene because of its diversity and endless possibilities, and now after building the scene up we are moaned at for references we make about our own piece of music, why?
We are all aware of the fact that this is dub-step but you cannot tell a person what type of music they make, that is up to the producer/creator
and if they adopt a style of dub-step it doesn't mean that they will be forcing their opinion on the rest of the audience. All we are doing is helping people to identify the style and influence. The fact is, love it or hate it, all music has sub genres look at heavy metal for instance. has that flopped?

Its people, politics and shit music that ruins scenes not sub genre's.

(sigh).......Firstly i'm black not white, secondly there are a lot of people who are telling me what to say and what not to say, who are you? 90% of u do not know me so cannot comment on who i am and what i make!! i do not just make dubstep i make, rnb, hip hop, soulfull house, broken beat, dnb, reggae, i make things u couldn't put a name on!!!!i chose to describe MY music as "liquid! and "intelligent" HOW THE FUCK IS THAT A RACIAL SLUR? i am using the words which i have found within my vocabulary to describe what i make, i am not saying here this is what we are calling it people AVE THAT! noooo i am sayin this is how i personally feel! but some people feel to tell me what to do, i beg u people come tell me to my face in dmz or fwd coz i absolutely doubt u will!! u wouldn't even look me in my eyes!! u guys have taken this sooo personal to the point where u look like a bunch of donuts!!! music ia music at the end of the day and no words can ever take anything from the music, i am a musician i was playing live instruments before clicking on a pc don't talk to me like i don't understand music, the reason i used the word liquid is because i have heard certain well respected dj's in the scene DESCRIBE it like that, my views are my views at the end of the day, and i dont care what any of u think about them coz your views are void, stop bickering about it and get off your asses and make beats and contribute something other than smart quips and sarky comments because your not doing anything, like someone said on this thread......THE DUBS WILL TELL, OH AND MARTIN CLARKE!! OPEN YOUR MIND BEYOND DNB BECAUSE DUBSTEP IS NOT DNB PEOPLE ASOCIATING IT TO THAT SCENE ARE TAKING AWAY THE INDIVIDUALITY OF THE SCENE AWAY FROM IT!!! because at the end of the day we are arguing over a pie that isn't even baked yet!!!
people lets just enjoy the music and look forward to the musical milestones which will be acheived in 2007 i make music for the people and ima keep making music for the people regardless of what u think about me or what i have to say.....ANTISOCIAL PUSHING THINGS FORWARD!!!

Apart from Quest's original post being dissected to within an inch of its life, I think this perhaps highlights the stigma of categorisation after the damge it seems to have done in other musical genres.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but after realising the originality of the scene perhaps all people could think about was the categorisation monster lurking in the woods.
But, after all, isn't this music composed of the fragments of decades of other genres? Can we deconstruct what has already been deconstructed?
I'm all for dubstep with more musical body. But then I can't get enough of stripped down beats 'n' bass.
I'm all for a Toasty track with giant synth washes, or 6 minutes of D1's chord changes. But then an eerie Random Trio stepper or some deep Pinch minimalism hits me just as hard.
Variety is the Ritchie Spice Refix of life!

the parallels are there. people are starting to section off different sounds so they have their "niche"
that's what everyone here keeps saying. you don't want it compared to dnb cuz it's different music, but even in it's infancy the same things that ruined dnb are being seen in this sound.
personally, i like a lot of the different sounds that i've heard. some of the funkier more soulful stuff is great to catch the attention of the househeads, some of the darker heavier stuff catches the attention of people in the industrial scene, etc.
the beauty of this music, is that there is one term to call it. and that it's left up to person listening or making the music to define what it is, but no definition is inherently right or wrong. it's all in the interpretation.
Yeah. It's not the race / class thing, it's just the implication that you and your music are intelligent and everyone else and theirs are stupid. And that your music is for sitting around and stroking your chin to while discussing it on Late Review whereas theirs is for going mad to at a dance and having a good time.Parson wrote:intelligent is still a sucky term
To quote Jah Peel, every time I hear about Intelligent Jungle I want to go and find some Stupid Jungle to listen to.
I've no real problem with the term 'liquid' though...

i used intelligent because of the musicallity of that sound like the subtle changes and variations, i understand music so i can hear something in a tune which would make me say wow this guy is deep purely based on the fact that i know what it took for him to do that i appreciate music on more than just the sonic level i appreciate it based on the process and the time and effort put into creating that part, or sound because at the end of the day producing is fundementally a labour of love
ITS THE END
no matter what people say dubstep IS in danger of becoming too much like dnb. i see it in the raves. LFO wobblers and cheesy vocal rehashes are becoming more and more the big thing. Music always moves in the direction of the majority (especially when commercial radio is concerned
) but dubstep is still young and we can try to give it a healthy upbringing.
nubalance, when he first heard it (today!) described it as 'music for dnb producers who have lost their way'... and i think i agree with him - in a good way. a lot of dnb heads i know have become disillusioned with it all and are turning to dubstep to fill the void (me included). it is like wiping your hard-drive and starting again with only what you REALLY need. if it gets clogged up with categories and sub-genres it gets too confusing again.
having said that i do feel that a lot of what gets played out at dubstep nights is only the visible bit of the iceberg. i rate the tunes and the djs but there is still room for experimentation as long as the djs and the crowds are willing to experience new forms.

This thread is laughable. If calling something Liquid isn't a blatant (even if accidental) association with dnb in itself I'm the next fucking pope. Wanna give it a name with no risk of association? Call it something totally unconnected - whether contrived or not.
This thread is close to being in dire need of locking down. Nuff heads saying stuff in public they'll regret in future.
I think it was the out and out 'brand' statement that got feathers ruffled. If you wanna describe it as that, up to you, if the mud sticks... Just remember though, the sound is already there - the musicality of a lot of dubstep has been there since day one. If you got a valid reason to describe it in this way, your call. Just don't go round like Jon the Baptist cos you'll get bare hackles up from all areas.
