Do you know what sort of style riddims you tend to like - rootsy / steppers-y / more hip hop influenced etc. Theres such a massive variety its quite difficult to make recommendations across the board. Artists doing it for me over the last year have been: Busy Signal, Movado, Vybz Kartel, Demarco, Assassin, Blak Ryno, Mad Cobra, Alborosie, Leftside, Aidonia...

Often a good way to find out about new artists is to find a riddim (instrumental) you like and check all of the different versions (usually theres a megamix on youtube) then see which vocalists style you like.

seems like a good time to point you towards my new promo mix for hyponik, tried to cover lots of different styles, mostly riddims from with the last six months or so. If theres anything you particularly like im happy to suggest other stuff you might like.

Let me tell you, as someone who has come from a Jamaican background and followed dancehall since I was early enough to hear that there is a LOT more to dancehall than you think...

My advice is to buy the Beth Lesser/Soul Jazz book available here:

http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=13466

It's cheap. It's big. The pictures are incredible and the book is packed with the context that you'll need to truly understand the music. It's changed a lot, put it that way! Definitely worth the purchase!

Get to know your riddims, start in the 80s with the digital riddims and work forward. Understand exactly what the dancehall was about, and how the music grew out from reggae and roots. Jamrid (http://www.jamrid.com/) or Riddimbase (http://www.riddimbase.org) are good places to start and will probably become quite important for reference.

I'll tell you a couple of key riddims to start you off...work out the artists/producers that you like later!

Stalag Riddim
Answer Riddim
Sleng Teng Riddim
Pepperseed Riddim
Tempo Riddim
Bellyas Riddim
Bookshelf Riddim
Punanny Riddim
Taxi Riddim
M16 Riddim
Playground Riddim
Showtime Riddim

Cool...PM me if you need any more guidance.

Cheers for the positive feedback guys, hope the mix has gone down well.

Yeah would definitely reccomend getting to know all the riddims which Elementalism suggested - all foundational stuff.

Thought it might also be useful to suggest some producers that are doing a lot at the moment:
Stephen 'Di Genius' Mcgregor (no doubt in my mind the no.1 - Big Ship recordings)
Christopher Birch
Equinoxx
Truck Back
Ballaz

The heatwave's rinse show and night Hot Wuk - if your ldn based is another great way of staying on top of new riddims. You can catch me and mosca playing at hot wuk on the 21st Jan if your about (another little plug - sorry).

Safe man, appreciate the feedback!
We played The Heatwave's night at the Big Chill house last night and it fully went off. Anyone looking for a midweek rave should definitely make sure to check Hot Wuk - amazing vibes and its free! Plus it was basically 90% girls which is never a bad thing!

Gonna be putting a few dancehall refixes out there pretty soon, probs give one away for free on here so keep ya eyes peeled.

bless up.
