Get in the habit of leveling everything as you go, n also, though its probably not the best thing to do, if you route back to single tracks, you can cut its volume some...

Read the thread on here called 'This thread will answer your mixing and mastering questions'... Its very helpful with learning to understand headroom and how adding sound fills it.
