I was just reminded that i recently described a track as Mike Oldfieldstep on a danish forum. Since i actually like some choice cuts from Mike, it was meant positively. (...and yes, it was a Quest track....)

It's interesting to read this thread, because eventhough enough people are talking complete bollocks, some people have actually made crystal clear sense. Heny G is particular, the man has it bang on, why the fuck are you all kicking off about a name of a sub genre? or is it the fact that someone is pushing a subgenre (which there will always always be)? or is it the fact that someone is likening the evolution and progression of dnb (which it mirrors very closely, whether certain, more publically acknowledged heads on here agree or not)?

I find it quite funny that certain heads here are saying it's all dubstep when I can remember the exact posts and blog articles saying how seperate breakstep is from dubstep, that is has nothing to do with it. Double standards are okay I guess just so long as no-one says out loud how similar a LOT of aspects of dubstep (tunes and history) is to dnb.

IMO it's not names that make for segregated subgenre ghettos, it's DJs who only play certain sorts of tunes, clubs who only book DJs who only play certain sorts of tune, punters who only go to clubs who only book DJs who only play certain sorts of tune. AFAIK, junglists didn't think "hey, some journalists / scenewatchers have defined jump up as a subgenre, we'd better start a night called AWOL to play it..."

I sort of do. I can't actually 'see' it, but the way i imagine how I want a track to sound somehow always seems to associated with certain colours, and mixes of colours.

Ignoring the offensiveness and inaccuracy, to me it just makes the music sound self important and overly serious and basically boring (which I'm assuming isn't true of Quest's stuff). I mean, why not go the whole hog and call it 'librarystep' or 'nerdstep' or 'chartered accountantstep' or something?
