Recording into abelton

this is probably really obvious but how can I record say some percussion into abelton without recording the track thats playing in the background? obviously I turn the sound on the mixer off and listen to it on my headphones but it still seems to record the track im playing over, I get the same problem in cubase with it recording the clicks of the metranome. Cant figure out what im doing wrong.

are you only arming the track you want to record in ableton?

I was just gonna ask that...

The only other thing I can think of is that you have the input on the chanel you are recording set to 'resample'.

Or... do you have the output of the whole computer going into the channel you are recording? That may also be it.

Would need to know more about your setup to really know without seeing it. What kind of soundcard/interface do you have, what is running into it, where are your outputs going before the speakers, how are you recording the percussion, etc...

Im thinking it may be to do with my setup somehow but I cant figure out what it is. Ive got a 2496 maudio card, the output is going to the middle channel on my mixer and theres a record out from my mixer going into the input of the souncard, im recording in through one of the mic sockets on the mixer. In abelton or cubase im arming the channel recording and listening to the track im recording over through my headphones and it always seems to rerecord the track or the metranome clicks aswell into the channel.

its just a dj mixer btw not a mixing desk, anyone got any ideas?

Seems like you have a loop going on.

I.E. you have the output of the mixer going into the soundcard, then the full output of the soundcard coming back into the mixer, therefore going back into the soundcard and so on.

Try using a home stereo or separate amp from the one you have the mixer hooked up to. I had the same problem for a while, can be right frustrating. I got a new soundcard to make it easier on myself. Check out the M-Audio FastTrack Pro, 4in, 4out, separate headphone out, USB bus powered around $200 US.

It could have something to do with recording through the mic channel also, some dj mixers the mic channel just goes over the whole output no matter what channels you have the volume down on. Running the output of the soundcard into something other than back into the mixer will free up the third channel for recording and keep that from happening.

Again, I really cant say for sure without checking it out myself first hand but hopefully this will help.

yea I reckon your probably spot on with the mic input not seperating from the rest of the mixer even with the faders down, looks like im going to have to save up for a card with jack & phono inputs, which is a bugger because I just had to rebuy the 2496 because my last one got fried

Like I said I would look into the M-Audio FastTrack Pro - $299 list price $199 actual price in the US. The most bang for the and Ive never had a prob with mine in almost a years worth of use.
