splitting freqs in ableton live?
How do you split bass frequencies in ableton live so you can treat mids/highs?

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
Im sure this is on the bible thread but add an audio effect rack and drag 3 eq3s in, make each one lo, mid, hi by cancelling the two bands you dont want. You end up with the track split into the 3 bands so you can then drag any more effects onto the band you want to effect. Probably wont make much sense since im poor at explaining but try the search function.
Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
Haven't tried that before
Should have thought of that. This might not be the smartest way to do it, but I usually make four return channels (eg. named A, B, C, D). A, B, C and my bassline channel are all set to "send only". Then I put a lowpass on A, a lowpass and a highpass on B, and a highpass on C. I then let the bass send to A, B and C, and I enable and turn up the sends to D on A, B and C. Then you can put fx on A, B and C, and adjust the freq of the filters as you like.

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
yea both work but yours is probably less cluttered way to do it, you have a whole track and fader for each freq band
Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
interesting one dethurah. i prefer splitting with sends as well, but i resample each bass sound separately rather than send them all together. so my setup would be bass to sends a,b,c then once its effected resample it back together.
Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
yea ive started to use the sends recently as said in this thread.
but i used to do by having 2 or 3 channels with the same simpler/synth loaded and then just split each channel like that with the EQ, then just group those channels together so i could effect them as a whole.

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
Yea I see there are several ways to do it, that all work and give different posibilities.
Your way is an interesting one too Jsills. I just recently got into resampling, and I can imagine how using it on a splitted signal could result in some insane modulations. I'll give it a try. Besides, my latest effort has been to come close to the bass sounds by Spor and combine it with dubstep, which obviously has got to do with some splitting, resampling, fx and notch filters.

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
this works for sure but i like sending because it saves processing and allows you to send different sounds thru the same effects so you dont have to rebuild your effects chain for every sound.djake wrote:yea ive started to use the sends recently as said in this thread.

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
Ok so I understand using the sends on bass channel to split freqs but what do you do after this? Hardwire all sends channels to a new audio channel to combine or do you send them all out through another 4th send?
Are you guys using eq3 or eq8?

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
I send them all through another 4th send. I hope my first post made sense.
And well, I use the Auto Filter, but you could use whatever EQ you like. Personally I wouldn't use the EQ3 though, since you have more control over where and how to split the freqs with the EQ8 or a filter.

Re: splitting freqs in ableton live?
the eq3 colors the sound btw
use the eq8 if you dont like that
