Atlantis filter: who's got it?
And more importantly - who's got it that feels like they have a pretty good grasp on controlling it? I've had it for a while but got put off by the interface: it's obviously a pretty advanced piece of software with a lot of possibilities, and while hitting 'random' a buncha times might eventually find a good sound, I'd prefer to know what the fuck I'm doing. Call me silly.

I have it too but i never really got into it.
It really seems overwelming at first glance.
Will look into it though..

Re: Atlantis filter: who's got it?
I use it CONSTANTLY!! Love it. So much possibility, but over kill is very easy. Atlantis filter has delay internal, so careful with adding another delay VST. Another great thing is you can let it "morph/move" on an effect like pan, pass filters, or cutoff without having to draw an automation on the track. Although it's only linear.
Re: Atlantis filter: who's got it?
Thanks Depone, I think I'll do that.
@Bass Hertz: Yeah, I'm just getting into automating FX in Reaper and really loving it - so when I see that morph/move thing and think about the possibilities I get a [musical] boner... so to speak. But man, even though I know what each particular function in each filter does, more or less, when they're all stacked together I have no idea what the hell's going on after a certain point. That's when I make my "er... um... " face.

Re: Atlantis filter: who's got it?
I am using Reaper too. I've found that Reaper has a lot of redundant features that can complicate the flow. Like envelope control in too many places when it should just be a visible option on the ev button. and syncing the points in the automation curves gives me hell. I can never get it the way i want it too sound. I want a certain rhythm in my cutoff automation, but just cant get it yet.alphacat wrote:Thanks Depone, I think I'll do that.

In Atlantis I found that a good way to learn the tweeks is to start buy turning everything off, then turning bits on one by one. *use the little red light in the upper right corner of each effect*.
edit: also in learning Atlantis: make a 4 or 8 bar loop with a block of a few notes, chords, in different octaves. then put reaper in track repeat. Then tweek Atlantis in real-time. you will get tired of the notes so you will proll change those every 15 minutes.

used to wild out on atlantis....not any longer. good vst that one.
Re: Atlantis filter: who's got it?
You're right: I hate to find fault with Reaper because I've come to love it so much, but yeah - sometimes my envelopes wind up inside the track lane instead of below it in its own dedicated envelope lane and I have no idea why; also, the range that an envelope can move seems restricted sometimes, like even if you blow it up so it's 2" tall on your screen the range of the envelope line maxes out and it's only halfway to the top of the lane (if that makes any sense.)bass hertz wrote:I am using Reaper too. Done both of these more or less - activated a single module at a time, made minor changes, listened... sometimes interesting/freakish things happen when the modules are crosslinked though, which is what I'm trying to get a better understanding of.bass hertz wrote:In Atlantis I found that a good way to learn the tweeks is to start buy turning everything off, then turning bits on one by one. *use the little red light in the upper right corner of each effect*.

The short loop on repeat idea is solid too, been doing that anyway and coming up w/ some cool sounds even if I don't quite know how... yet. Meanwhile there's always the "stop, render, repeat" approach too I guess.

OK, just by way of illustrating what I mean here - the manual isn't written as well as it could've been, honestly. For example, take this - from one of the opening pages - instructions on the most basic functionality of the plug... and I had to read and re-read several times to get WTF they're trying to say. I'm not the slowest cat on the block nor the fastest, and I read tech manuals all day long and have seen worse. However, if any of you can absorb all of this exception-laced shit after just reading it once...

In the end, I'm learning more from observing the changes made with the random button than I am from the manual.

Re: Atlantis filter: who's got it?
Atlantis is very powerful, yet the defualt gui is fugly...
For an instant improvement, start by installing the limeflavour skins downloadable from here ---> http://www.box.net/shared/3ev8qj13js
Right-click-drag a control to set the direction and depth of the modulation.
The fact that the effects routing can be configured in multiple ways is slightly confusing...
Just read the manual as many times as you can bare and twiddle with the controls until something 'clicks'!

No love from FSTZ yet. If you're reading this man, well, just know that we needed you and you weren't there for us. Typical DJ.
Seriously tho-
Futures_Untold, thanks for the skins tip. They're a bit of an improvement, although I'm still trying to figure this whole thing out.
I showed the excerpt from the manual that I posted above to one of my audio pro friends [who basically reads manuals all day long... for fun] and his eyes almost rolled back in his head. Nice to know it wasn't just me.
Jeremy Evers, if you ever read this: please revise your documentation for Atlantis. It's tearing my ass out the hard way.

But I'm surprised you're having trouble with it, as it isn't the most complex modulation system on the planet.
L1/L2 uses the envelop shape of LFO's 1 & 2, E1/E2 use the envelope shape of envelope 1 & 2 and C1/C2 combine the shapes of which ever LFO/Envelopes you've assigned to the Combine control.
The automation depth is set by right-click-dragging the control to the depth you wish. There is a visual indicator in the form of a coloured bar along the slider slot that shows you how deep the modulation depth is.
As mentioned, the filters and shapers can be configured in different ways to run in series or in parallel.
Or am I missing something?
Re: Atlantis filter: who's got it?
I use Atlantis filter as a way to get passed writers block - with that random button you can find all manner of inspiration!
Ill try out those skins tho as it is a deeply user unfriendly design ... although that is something I expect from most vsts - seriously if I designed UI like that for a game Id get the boot!
