Junior lecturers don't actually earn that much, you generally need to be Reader grade or higher to earn a decent amount as far as I remember. Also, unless anthropology is very different from other faculties in the UK, lectureship positions open up relatively rarely and there is usually much more demand than there are positions. This is mainly coz they're essentially positions for life in Europe (barring moves between universities).

As for Psychology, Clinical Psychology's probably where the money's at. Real pain to get into though as there are stupendously few positions available and most of them wouldn't even consider you until you've had some experience (ie working as a trainee/assistant for free) under your belt. A mate of mine's finally landed a paying job after a year of looking and will then start his training as a clinical psych.

Yes, unfortunately, I know the struggle looking for work - it's terrible. I'm still an undergraduate and it's nigh on impossible for work. Everyone wants you to have experience, but no one is willing to dish any out, and i've only been looking for work that's pro-bono.
Finally gave it up after January because I've got to focus on my dissertation - no point in running before I can walk and all that - but even looking for assistant work as a trainee is difficult.

I've had a tip-off recently though about how to get around paying for the MSc though - most Uni's offer post-grad education at a discounted rate if you work for the university, so i'm looking into that - one of my mates from last year had secured a fee waiver meaning he gets his MSc for free and he's a PA at another campus.

My main aim is to study as far as clinical and then i'm out of here to set up a high-end rehab clinic somewhere remote... I'll charge celebrities for rehab and detox, and put a significant sum of the profit into local infrastructure or build an orphanage or something. 8)

I'm kind of interested in anthropology or something involving people. Obviously my true love is music, but it's really cool to learn about and understand people.

Yeah my mate drives up to Coventry (from London) for a couple days every week.

The odd bit (probably) is that it's easier to get PhD positions. And most of them will be based on research grants so your Uni fee will be covered, and you'll have an amount to live on as well.

It was fun to study but it doesn't bake any bread. If I was to write an enthnography, it would be a study on how much time, effort, and money goes into schooling, and how the outcome for most is a shit job with little pay.

it's also what everyone wants to do, last year a lecturer asked how many of us wanted to go into clinical and probably 75% of the course put their hands up.

with only a BA in Anthro you'll most likely end up working in an office....as has been said, all Arts/Social Sciences courses are like that. If you get a Master's or PhD your options may open up...but probably in academia.

I was talking to someone I know who is much older. his wife got a degree in one of these sorts of programs...ends up running a marketing firm. he made the point that even with something like marketing, going to university for that may end up pointless as you can just learn it relatively quickly.

I've been taking Philosophy but realize that despite how interesting it can be its a fairly useless degree, and I have no interest in working in academia.

lol I remember when I first went off to university I told my great uncle that I was gonna take Poli Sci. he told me "that's the program you take when you have no idea whatsoever what you wanna do in life"
