how hard is it to remix a track if you don't have the mastertracks? bare in mind i have very little production experience...i just want to maybe rearrange the song, mix it better...

if you're just rearranging a tune then thats a re-edit, pretty easy to chop a tune up...

however if you want a remix, you can't really do much unless the specific elements you want to use are on their own at some point, or at least very prominent in a quiet part of the track...

If you just want a better mix of it, you can chop tunes up and rearrange them easily enough with some wave editing software and a sequencer.

Getting a better mixdown would probably just involve fancy eq-ing and compression, cos if you don't have the separate tracks you can't really fiddle with each part of the song (i.e. drums, bassline, lead etc) on its own.
Depends what your trying to do tho really!

Just copy the patterns, it doesn't take that long. use your own sounds. Listen to the bass line, figure out the notes, load up a vst, make a sick patch and there you have it. copy the beat pattern and use your own drum sounds. If the tune has specific samples in it, figure out where they came from. Its not that hard to do a remix. A funy thing about remixes is you may end up starting one, and like your version better and end up reworking it so it is your own.

good luck.
