I'd go for something really well thought out - I mean, you're the one that knows her as a person - what does she like? what are her interests? get her something she'll make use of, or something she finds interesting... It shows you've put thought into getting her something special.

Generally, the closer you get to the day without thinking, the more expensive the gift becomes...
