[master thesis] London Pirate Radios

Post by 2000f » Mon Feb 15, 2010 8:47 pm

Ez all,

long time I've been on the forum board, hope all is bless.

I've just started working on my master thesis in (urban and cultural) geography from Roskilde University in Denmark, focusing on the pirate radios of London and how they create temporary urban spaces and communities.

I'll be in the UK March 1st-8th doing field work and interviews for the thesis. However, I need to get in touch with pirate radios in London so I can set up interviews.
I'm currently trying to sort out interviews with Geeneus, Kode 9, Mala and others. But I would love to get hold of station managers, owners etc. I would also like to interview "regular" pirate radio listeners; i.e. people who feel connected to e.g. dubstep via the radios but themselves don't necessarily dj, produce, play on the radios.

All ideas, comments and suggestions to whom I ought to contact (and how) are more than welcome, as well is relevant literature/links. I truly appreciate all your help. :)

you might already have read this but:

entertaining read.

question I'd be most interested in is how pirates deal with internet, whether fm radio will continue to be integral to the whole underground infrastructure... I certainly hope so, something magic about receiving actual airwave transmissions

it's worth dropping Mulder (he of Urban Takeover fame) a message - he's been a proper archivist/historian of the Bristol pirate scene in particular. He could talk your ears about it...

Ez all crew

finally: my master's thesis (Just 4 U London - Pirate Radio in a Geographic Perspective) on the pirate radio phenomenon of London has been handed in, and yesterday I went to the university to defend it. It all went very well, as I got the highest grade possible, and was even asked if I would be interested in continuing my research with a PhD study.

All in all, I wanted to thank you lot for taking time to help me with my thesis research. Much appreciated!

Please find below a link (copy and paste in to your browser) with a pdf of my master's thesis:

Long time no see bro!

Sounds interesting, will it get online at some point - would love to read what everyone says!

Pirate has been as massive a piece of my life as records, weed n eating are! Spent most of my life listening to em, god bless Don FM - the original! Its funny, was talking to a mate about how different (maybe I'm just old....) it is nowadays! Back then it was all about buying records n djing on a Sat night on station, these days you dont even have to leave your house for record shopping and playing on a radio station! Albeit an internet one! Sadly nothing beats true pirate style... The dodgy office block by hanger lane for Blaze FM was one of the best I'd played at, we even had a security man at the front desk lol!

This site is a great one, check the pirates of old in the station page!

the best one i heard was from wil blaze, apparently him & thc used to do a pirate in reading that was in some random farmer's field, they'd set up in his chicken coop ... chickens squawking when the mic was on, getting chased out of the field by the guy with a shotgun when he found out, etc. classic!

nice work on the thesis sir :)

Thank you, everyone! :) Much appreciated.

I have been asked to send the thesis to various academic journals etc, and have therefore stopped sharing the pdf. I hope the ones who got to download it have enjoyed reading it :)

I seem to have missed the boat on this. Is there any way you could send the pdf to me in a PM or something? I'd love to read it.
