Do you really think violent video games create violent people? How come all my friends have played violent video games and watched extremely violent movies their whole life, but are all peaceniks? My older brothers used to get me to watch slasher flicks when I was about 5 or 6 years old... I've watched some of the most intense movies you'll ever see, but I haven't thrown a punch since I was about 13 (and that was to stop someone bullying a younger friend on the bus).

I've also got a formidable collection of Tartan Extreme DVDs, but I've never had the urge to cut someone's face off.

Why is it that, if it's video games and movies causing problems (which are available to all kids) that it tends to be those from difficult upbringings, broken homes and poor surroundings that end up with violent crime problems?

What about violent music? Grime? Should we ban grime? Gangsta rap? What about all the music that the Columbine kids listened to - how come it's the video games and movies, but not the music?

There's quite a clear line for me between organised fighting in rings/gyms and random fights in public. This was clearly pretty unpleasant and undesireable behaviour from both blokes who need to get their anger sorted out in other places - perhaps rings and gyms!

However, I am tempted to disagree with the video games / films causing violence, I think it's probably more down to the inequality's in society - people see other people doing better than them and they can't seem to find a way to get to that position themselves - they need guidance and education and a more equal society to have hope and give a shot without treading on anyone else. This society may lead to people glorifying violence in it's self, and thus wanting to watch and play violent films/games. I dunno I may be wrong, I can only see this from my viewpoint, but I played a hell of a lot GTA when I was in primary school and I'm a pacifist.

People always use Branson as a "look what he did all on his own" type example, the man is paying fuck all tax and living a life of luxury he is anything but a role model! (don't know how I jumped topics to that... anyway, as you were)

This is my thought on fighting genrally, all fighting like that really accomplishes is displaying a complete lack of control. To me it takes more of a man to settle differences with words. Although not to disrespect martial arts as most forms, as i am aware, employ the importance of self control and i do admire the athleticism involved in mastering such practices, i'm talking more about losing control through anger and hatred towards someone else and punching their face in. To do that requires nothing but an inhibited ability to keep a lid on your own emotions when appropriate which i would have thought is something necessary to function in society at all.

Then again i say all this but admittedly i'm not overly sensitive when it comes to most of this and i can watch some of the youtube videos in the context of a joke and if i saw that in real life i may laugh in the sense of thinking "oh my god, what a dick".

Hell, up until the 1920s, men boxed barehanded and executions were publicized. Since the rise of suburbia in the last fifty years, people have gotten more and more uptight on violence. Real life violence has fallen drastically, and entertainment violence has gone up.

I suppose you could say that violence is more institutionalized now. Ideologically we as a people are more conditioned to accept violence only in pre-determined cases and to actively endorse its acceptable contexts. The law outlines the extent to which an individual has the right (permission) to use physical force. The hardcore violence is monopolized by the heads with helmets

Eeeerrr, let's keep in mind that most of us are fairly intelligent, educated individuals. Diplomacy isn't something natural to human beings, considering we are just animals. Rival cats aren't going to sit down and have a chat and a cuppa about their problems, and neither would cavemen. We're taught to settle our differences through words by whatever society and parents we find ourselves with.
