Minimal music doesn't mean minimal effort.

Re: The best technique/piece of advice you've heard
I made this thread back in april, and looking at what I listed in my first post I've got to say the two most important things I've learned since then are also two of the most basic:
1. Sample choice. Especially when used for percussion, spend time finding or creating the cleanest and most precise samples you can. Good samples arranged in a fresh format = half the song done.
2. Learn the synth you're using. It's better use one synth I knew inside and out than 5 synths I had the basics with. The more you use a synth, the more nuances you find, elements unique to that synth you can incorporate into your sound.

Re: The best technique/piece of advice you've heard
not really advice just some techniques I've picked up
If you think something is missing from your tune but you don't know what it is, render a loop of what you've got and play it in VDJ (or any DJ software) and just mix it with other tunes, it gives you a good idea of what else can fit in your track. I've been doing this recently and I've started adding more to tracks (atmospheres, ambience all that good stuff)
Also if you've got a little keyboard or anything like that break it out and jam along to what you've got so far, it's so easy to get lost in the technical details of DAWs and lose your creativity and can't express how much this helps.
NOTHING is more important thatn getting the right sound, as long as it takes and however difficyult it might be it WILL be worth it
READ EVERYTHING, there's so much free, worthwhile information out there

Parallel expansion? Is that like the opposite of new york (parallel) compression? So you have it massively expanded on a send and mix that into the master? Rad.
