Serato 2.0 Beta

Post by kidlogic » Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:40 am

Get it! The newest build seems pretty stable... and sounds AMAZING! Even with an SL1! I didnt think 1.9 sounded that bad honestly, but 2.0's sound quality is noticably better.

The FXs they added are pretty sweet too, filters, delays, bitcrushers, echos and more - although not sure how much Ill use em.

They added a new auto-tracklisting feature seems good, although I havent messed with it just yet. I guess you now get a personalized page that will update your tracklists in real time as you play... looking into that more now actually.

Oh, and you can hide the waveforms!

It is still in beta, so I wouldnt use it at gigs just yet, and follow the directions to keep your stable version of 1.9... that said, I had no problem with it in 3 hours of use today.

Get it at http://www.serato.com

Should probably mention my specs... IBM PC laptop, 1.46ghz 2.0gb RAM - havent tested it on my Mac yet as I primarily use that PC for Serato only.

kidlogic are you running two cores or a single Pentium?
i haven't moved off 1.8 because 1.9 for some reason stopped recording on my Gateway 2.0ghz single core Pentium.
i'm thinking it's a memory management issue.
hiding wav forms is key for me though. they have always been a nuisance for me. i hardly ever look at the screen because i'm more focused on the crowd.

Single Im pretty sure... its an old work PC I got from a friend when I thought my iBookG4 died (fixed it with a $20 part, score!).. Im at work right now, but I could post full specs when I get home if needed... pretty sure since it was used as a site computer for a construction company its a pretty basic single core - it still has a nub "mouse" in the middle of the keyboard to give you an idea of how old it is.

I dont record using Serato (I always record into Audacity) so dont know exatly whats up with that either way... I was having a few more USB dropouts than I was used to with 1.9 v 1.8, but none so severe it was a problem... would make sense that there was some sort of memory issue with 1.9 then though.

I have serato installed on my lappy for the gigs when I show up and it's already hooked up

our residency club has a small booth so we can't really have 2 setups so we just switch out laptops and use serato

I have been thinking about buying a sl1 box tho....

I'm with it

:-)

Before I installed 2.0 I would have said get the SL3, and although Im sure it sounds killer, Id say save the cash and get the SL1 now for sure unless you want to be able to have more than 2 decks - I know there are other reasons for buying an SL3 v SL1 (96k out, less inputs to mess with, smaller size, etc) with the sound quality improvement now, I personally cant justify the upgrade myself for now. 3 decks sounds pretty sweet, but with the SP6 sample player and a midi controller you can get the same effect... and since the addition of the onboard FXs (killer ones I may add) is making me think about a new controller, I think Ill be good for now until I can afford a TTM57.

I was like playing new tunes with the sound quality difference, I didnt think Id notice it as much as I did, at least on my home setup...

all that said, it is still in Beta, and still only the second build of the Beta (they usually go through at least 4 builds, often more before the full version) so be careful and do the dual install and back up songs... I think Im gonna use it to broadcast friday though, Im always down for a little trial by fire >:)

Mmmm...sounds interesting. I will have to peep this. Been on 1.9.? for a while and still haven't really dug into how to work the sampler, but hoping to really sink my teeth in soon. Maybe a new beta will give me inspiration. LOL
Here, have a free tune:

on the second build so far actually... and although I wouldnt use it for a gig just yet, I highly suggest getting it. Make sure to follow the instructions to install two versions so you can keep your stable version of 1.9 on your box, but seriously get the 2.0 beta...

Thanks

what are the differences in efx between traktor and serato? I've been swaying towards buying traktor pro just for the efx but I prefer the idea of seratos verticle wav bars and as a dvs it just seems better.

I know traktor efx like the back of my hand as I've used traktor studio for
many many hours but since the switch to vinyl I've been missing them.

Gah this makes me really happy as I'm buying a dvs on Monday and using this weekend to decide which one

Ive only messed with them enough to see what they all did... but they're pretty sweet. Lots of parameters for each FX, saveable custom presets, all midi mappable.

Without looking (Im at work right now), off the top of my head it has LPF, HPF, Bitcrusher, Flange, Phaser, Delay, Echo, Repeater (glitchy effects like ableton's Beat Repeater) and a couple more. All are beat sync'd (as long as the overview is built for the song already) and they all sound pretty clean.

Im thinking of getting the Korg Nano unit that is all knobs and faders specifically to run the FXs (and the pitch controls for the SP6)

I think theres some vids on the Serato site showing them off.

The other feature that Im digging on the more I learn about it is the real-time playlist export - you can have it post the tracks you're playing currently to a Serato DJ profile either real-time or offline with an export. Very usefull for online radio.

that sounds proper sweet, finally serato catching up to NI. got a midi controller already but was looking at selling it for either the black nano or a maudio triggerfinger. got a numark TC but not really ideal

yeah the playlist export sounds a good for radio.

Cheers pal, hope all is well!

Yeah, I like that with this new release they've simultaneously made it better for those who just want vinyl emulation, and those who want something to rival Traktor.

No prob GWA! Hope you're good too homie
