the key to respectable rap music is that it can't have been produced after 1996. otherwise its not respectable best years were probably 90-94. i'm talking american rap, I don't know much about british or other variations

I wouldn't go THAT far, but yeah, a lot of the stuff I like most is from the mid-90s, definitely agree that there was a standard of quality back then that just seems to be gone for the most part.

...but I think it's just because the MAINSTREAM lowered it's standards, a lot of lesser known contemporary rappers are on some shit for real.
