Collabing

Post by jaydot » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:30 pm

OK, so what entails a collab? I know what one IS, I just don't know how two people could do it via the Internet. Wouldn't you have to like meet up?

How would it work.

I'd be interested in doing it though, once I got a lot better at producing.

All the collab's i have done have been done in Reason so it's relatively easy to send a project file to each other as you can self contain all the samples into the file. But would have thought i'd be difficult doing it this way if you're both using programs such as Logic or Cubase, because of all the third party plugins and VSTs that could be involved in the project.

you sort of export the stems and any midi parts then send them accross really, not too difficult.

sure its not 100% flexible, but in my experience it works better than actually sitting down with someone else to make a tune, which normally ends up as either one person making the tune and the other chiming in with a suggestion every now and then, or more often, just pissing about for hours and not getting anything useful done.

I would, as I said, be up for collabing six months down the line. Got to get my own tracks finished properly first which will take another 6 months. But someone give me a shout further down the line... :r:

How much input, proportion wise, defines a collab?

Say if one guy comes up with the stylistics so to speak, the theme, and an outline of a beat and bassline, but the other guy does the majority of the production is that still a collab? I wouldn't say so....because I'd like to collab but need to get better individually first........just wonderin how much I would have to do in order to define me as a collaborator.

no offense but it takes lots more than 6 months to even get half decent.

Pretty simple, just send stems back and forth and keep adding in layers...if you use the same DAW as the person you're collabin' with you can just keep swapping the session file back and forth.

Renoise actually preserves samples and shit in session files, I love that shit.

That's occured to me since making that post actually. :) I've settled since making that post. You're pretty decent, how long have you been producing (as a whole, not jus dubstep)

as a whole? Seriously for about 3 years, before i dossed about on ableton and reason. Self taught, but if i read more forums like this one, i would be miles better by now. Dont fret mate, things will click into place sometime soon!
