i persoanlly love how all their drums sound like amazing real breakbeats you would find on some 70's record or something, only totally fucking badass. diplodocus is a prime example. For me its really got that vibe that i grew up on, with people such as portishead, massive attack and trikcky using 'big beats' sampled from record and re-interpritated. Not saying this is the way they do it btw

It's all about layering your sounds.
For example I can have a nice high crispy snare, which sounds good on it's own but it lacks some low frequenties.
Then I'm going to look for a snare sample with a nice low punch and a short attack.
Maybe I find a snare sample with has this low punch, but it has a high tail, then I just cut of everything except the punch / attack part of it.
When layering this beneath your other snare, sending them to seperate mixer channels, and sending this to another mixer channel with a compressor on it to make it one sound again.
Sometimes I can layer a tambourine or a nice open hat beneath it to create that crispiness.

The same can be done with bassdrums.
Layering a nice higher bassdrum with a nice sub / low bassdrum and taking out some frequenties, taking the tail of, layering, processing and just bounce it out sometimes to process it further.

'Overproduced' has odd connotations, but I do think that Noisia's production sounds sterile. To me, they're pretty standard DNB producers with a very distinct sound (as in, the straight up tones of their reeses and drums) that you either love or hate.

Can anyone please show me an example of their supposedly breathtaking drum programming? I've heard so much of their stuff but none of the drum patterns tickle my fancy.

and manage in my humble opinion to straddle

Just show me an example of their dnb with supposedly great drum programming. Link something that you think has great programming, since I fail to see any of it and I'm curious if I'm missing something out here.

remember noisia are doing dancefloor dnb not idm-esque experimental type stuff, so their rhythms arent gonna be as hectic as some of those you've mentioned. but they have groove, their hihat work is generally fucking spot on.

for something a bit more chopped you could check out exodus, 2nd drop in particular is pretty scatty
