What are the basics of this patch?

Post by kevinthr » Sat Mar 20, 2010 2:51 am

Hi, I'm kind of new to production, and I'm trying to make a sound like the bass synth in this track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlEBf-D6P0E
It's the one that the high end of it sounds like...a comb scraping something.
If anyone could tell me the basics of how to achieve this sound, please help me out. It would be appreciated.

Sounds like a pretty simple square, maybe saw. Subtle bitcrushing, good equing.
Probably some compression and some other minor stuff, but it sounds pretty straightforward.
He has it highpassed a lot of the time with other basses covering the low end, which adds to it's crunchyness.

Correct me if Im wrong, but that comb sound...

If you set a square lfo to absolute range on your filter cutoff, and then a sine lfoon the volume?

Square and saws under it, sine sub even lower down.

To me it sounds quite analogue as well. The 'square' you can here in this is probably mixed with a saw. thats what it sounds like to me

yeah that be a saw wave into bandpass filter with a good dose of res
monophonic , plenty of portamento
get that comb/raking sound by moving the filter cut off whilst your pulling the lemon face
he's probably playing that bassline with one hand going between 1 note then the next octave above with the index and little finger and using the other hand to fuck about with that filter

Anyways big up Depone on that COA release biggness!!

Also you can get the filter to increase as the note goes up with key tracking but that's for another time
