Totally uninspired

Post by jaydot » Wed Mar 31, 2010 12:25 pm

Dudes, gee me up.

I'm trying to make a track. But I am sat there and I don't know what to do... I've made something but it's no good. I dunno, hit a brick wall and cba.

How do you "become inspired?

Maybe a new VST is order, or a new technique, or new software altgother.

Someone link me to a tune where I can listen it and go "I want to make that".

i know exactly how you feel, ive written a few tracks im quite happy with lately, but right now am stuck.

best advice i can think is try something you wouldnt normally do, like break your normal routine of how you get a track off the ground. experimentation with samples, synths etc. try not to make something happen, rather just fuck about and have a bit of fun

I think it was overkill with me. I was doing it too much, but I've gave it a bit of a break and want to get back into it.

I think making a track for DSFC22 will do me the world of good.

I also was making too many remixes. I think I've done too many and need to start making more "original" tracks.

Totally opposite for me, use to take me a month to finish just one song but in the last two weeks or so I've finished off 4 or 5 songs. OP, maybe you could just work on some drum loops or synths, get a loop going and then leave it. Come back to it when you do feel inspired, better if you do that rather than sitting on a track and doing bugger all.

Yeah take a step back, do other things, listen to lots of music from all genres.

Another good one is to try and replicate an artist that influences you. Take a song, break it down, learn the processes. it all helps

Don't force yourself, do other things for a few days or maybe weeks. You'll get it back at some point!

best advice i heard - 'don't try and write a song. once you try, you're fucked'

...which i've always interpretted as 'don't bother trying to make a song if you don't naturally get some sort of interesting idea come to you first'

zomby always says that he effectively has the songs finished in his head before he makes them, i think that's the best way... get the sound in your head then try and sculpt it, rather than going in without an idea of a finished thing...

don't rush inspiration, take some time out, listen to stuff you wouldn't usually, don't force yourself to get excited about a sound or idea that isn't instinctively exciting

To the guy who said I should make the sound in my head. If I could do that every tune would be a banger.

i only make music when i feel like it. i never force it. it's not like it's my living or anything. but even when i'm not making something i will try and make drum sounds or synth patches to save.

Not sure what music you are into besides dubstep jay, but I remember a bit ago I was in the same spot you were in and I downloaded Fever Ray's album, shit was very inspiring to me. I didn't end up making songs of that sort but it helped me get the ball rolling. It may just be me but I love slow chill music, probably more so then most people.

turn off your pc, and especially the internet and get the fuck out of home. walk around, don't take your headphones with you, instead get inspirired by those millions of sounds in nature....
maybe it will take an hour walk, maybe 3 days of being offline and enjoying some natural soundscape.

i get often inspiried by this when nothing 'emotional' gives me an inspiration.

this is exactly what i love about summer, the free feeling, the weather, everyone seems to be in an upbeat mood. Perfect time for writing music.
