I shook Elvin Jones' hand once. His hands were so big! And the way he played those drums...macc wrote:A bitJFK wrote:Damn.... Mid-60's avant garde jazz is my bag. Davis helped lead the way in that field, along with numerous others of course.
You think I talk a lot of shit about production... don't get me started about Elvin Jones

Miles' mid 60's band is one of the best ever and I think Wayne Shorter is a brilliant composer.

There's more to it than that and you know it...
Andrew Hill - Siete Ocho. Has to be the best intro I have ever heard, in any genre of music, in anything. Except possibly Skinning Pit by Therapy?.

Another one for you... Elvin also starred in the first - and possibly only - electric western, 'Zachariah'.

You have to be a BAD motherfucker to shoot a man dead and then tear the place up with a drum solo.

Back to the OP -
Give this a try.

On top of all of the very valuable/spot-on info everyone else has contributed here, my experience with "artificial" stereo ambience processing is that it either A) produces a noticeable effect only in headphones where channel separation is virtually 100%, B) is often barely noticeable on a big system, and/or C) is best used sparingly - not on entire mixes, just on stuff like ambient synths & textures and stuff with a lot of mid-hi's. Using it on bass & drums, well, all bets are off. If you can get it to do something cool more power to ya.

Re: Stereo Enhancement/Panning
This is probably flawed logic somewhere, but I set my signal through my cdjs and turned them mono out of desperation (broken gear, long story)... but I feel a little less concerned about phase and stuff now... doing precise edits on hat pans and stuff is a little tougher, but, the way I see it, when I render and listen in stereo, the stereo image will be icing ont eh cake and I can know ith confidence it sounds GREAT in mono without harmful phase issues, ect.
Although, occasionally, switching to stereo I catch little frequency clashes I need to eq, because they were phased away or less prevelant in mono or something...
Basically what Im getting at, is produce with it sounding spectacular in mono in mind. If you have much of a difference in sound outside the top end percussion switching between mono/stereo, you might have a problem. As someone said above, you can get really bad phase cancellation if your not careful.
And as I think someone else said above, most club end systems are mono

Re: Stereo Enhancement/Panning
Ozone, used sparingly or as a mastering utensil, is nice...
Ive seen fools slapping presets everywhere in thier chains and squiching everything to hell, not good.
But, used here n there for its stereo enhancement/warmers n stuff, it works.
Tight EQ in ther too.

Re: Stereo Enhancement/Panning
I've recently started using the method of separating the audio in two channels more frequently.Hard panned left and right, delaying one of the signals by a couple of milliseconds.
Magic!

Re: Stereo Enhancement/Panning
i tend to do 3 channels as opposed to 2...the 3rd one being centered mono and lowpassed. the other 2 highpassed and offset slightly...doesnt work for everything but prevents phasing and keeps lowend artifacts in the middle.Disco Nutter wrote:I've recently started using the method of separating the audio in two channels more frequently.Hard panned left and right, delaying one of the signals by a couple of milliseconds.
