Based on personal experiences, I'd avoid HP computers. Absolutely no customer support, and I had one that got completely fried due to the fan not working properly. Worse still, this was a known manufacture error, and so for that model (G6000) warranties in USA etc had be extended, but not for UK. I know several others of their models suffer with this, internet research showed a big stream of unhappy customers with no power to get them replaced or repaired etc. There's only one version of ball ache worse than having a broken computer, losing everything and getting no wherehaha

What are you using it for?

running music software, mainly reaper and some vsti's. writing documents, surfing web, streaming video and audio, preferable at the same time.

I'd go with the second.

Unless you're mobile a lot or using it to play out I wouldn't even get a laptop though.

Yer i had a HP pavillion dv6000 less than two years ago, already upgraded to a mac pro in january. Hardware started failing etcccc....
The acer has the new intel processor which is a bonus and i havent heard any acer horror stories as of, go that one man
(or just get a 13" mac pro and never upgrade your laptop ever again)

I have a similar Acer that's about a year old and it's great. I've never ran production software on it aside from Live just for fun, but I have no doubts it would run fine except for sound issues. The onboard sound is actually very good for a laptop and has one of those Tuba subs which is pretty good for music/video (within reason). The support was good enough the couple of times I called, but it wasn't anything technical really. The widescreen is really nice as well. The only thing I didn't like is the proprietary software Acer installs, and the "media mode" button thing, but that stuff can be disabled. Just make sure to make proper backups of the default install in case there are any warranty issues.

I've also had bad experiences with HP/Compaq and avoid them these days. Can't say much about the current products or company.

HP make decent servers and blades, but I wouldn't touch their desktops and laptops with yours.

Acer generally seem pretty good.
