Dubstep producers coming from a classical background ?
Re: Dubstep producers coming from a classical backgrounds ?
^^haha amen to that man. I let all that classical training go out the window for a while and concentrated on just making cool sounds, but lately I've been harking back to the ol' theory

YEP ! What a think catches attention aside from cool sounds (but really in dubstep a catchy dirty bass sound is a cool sound no ?) is really the melodic pattern or the harmonic build around the tune. But lets say it's kind of 50/50. Cool sounds ... 50% check, nice melody and strong harmonic build .. 50% check.

Essential? Nah.Hellomadame wrote:Well for my part, I'm coming from an intensively classical background. I've been studying both the harpsichord and organ (maybe all the filthiness comes from there hahaha) and music theory and ear training at college and still doing it. Anyone think it's essential ?
Possibly helpful - maybe even an extraordinary advantage if used well? Definitely.
Especially since it's keyed instruments you've been learning, too.
This is just my opinion, but if you started really digging into the history of dub proper (not -step) and the musical & production aspects particularly, you would be a fuckin' force to be reckoned with in the dubstep world. I've recommended this book before but I can't give it enough props - it's like taking a college-level course in Dub 101.

10 years classical piano - guilty. 10+ years of not actually having a proper piano at hand - guilty.

I know that one - grade 8 guitar at age 16 then didn't bother even owning one for most of my 20s, only just got one again recently. I found doing the grades sucked all the fun out of it for me.desto wrote:10 years classical piano - guilty. 10+ years of not actually having a proper piano at hand - guilty.

Bit of a random one that's not really that relevant, but did anybody see the BBC program where Goldie wrote that classical piece? His mentor was playing all of this interesting, and i think modern, classical music, and I remember thinking I should give it a listen but never did. So have any of you classically trained lot got any suggestions?
By the way, I've been a long time lurker but never wanted to join because I don't want to get drawn into silly arguments about wobbles and ketamine.

There's more tunes on the way fairly soon as well as my Shuanise remix that will be out on UpMyAlley (digital only unfortunately) and my Michael Black Electro remix on a spesh vinyl on Team Acre soon. I'll post more info when release dates are confirmed.mistayif wrote:@ desto, your tunes are absolutely sick, love cold vip and disappearing reappearing ink. got any more releases in the pipeline?
But yeah, i've gotten back into playing keyboards a lot more again. I think classical training can hold you back a bit until you can disregard the rules and genuinely expand your musical thinking further. This said, i definitely don't regret having the background as it is a part of how my tunes end up sounding.

Anyone interested in this topic needs to read Rogue's Foam blog - try this piece on Burial as an example http://rougesfoam.blogspot.com/2009/12/ ... er-vs.html
He talks about how great electronic music can be analysed in classical terms - but how it doesn't matter whether the producer intended the harmonic complexity in formal terms or whether they came to it instinctively.
BTW keep an ear out for some amazing dubstep w/ classical instruments from the outrageously talented Message To Bears http://www.myspace.com/messagetobears
