gotta agree with that bruvDJL wrote:The other skill you have to learn apart from beatmatching is playing out to a live audience. You need to be able to read the crowd and keep them dancing or if some people look like they are knackered you bring it down a bit etc. The people who get into a 'zone' like youngsta or geeneus are good at feeling the atmosphere in a room and, connecting with the crowd, and then taking them somewhere else. The real top djs are good at this. Don't think it matters what equipment you use to do that.
dj's showing up with thumb drives.

and we all come to a wonderful peace...gather round, have a beer, big ups and all that...

until the next time someone brings up thumb drives...and then we shall battle again...yargh!

the sonic possibilites of ableton are light years beyond what 2 or 3 decks and a mixer can do...[/quote]
:?: any sound that can be played from vinyl is possible

im not talking about the capablity to reproduce sounds
im talking about the ability to make combinations of sounds that decks do not facilitate

if you had that combination of sound on a vinyl you could play it.Konehed wrote:im not talking about the capablity to reproduce sounds

you are right you could not layer as much live. How many tracks can you run with Ableton simultaneous?
my simple approach - I buy records I like and then play them to my friends. If I think a tune needs/would sound better with more filters/effects or a different structure then I do not leave the shop with it.
Do Ableton mixtapes sound better than those done on decks? I am open to persuasion as I've never knowingly downloaded/listened to a mix using Ableton.

nope. but all of the time you spent learning how to program, and pick the right tunes, and know when to drop the right tune...all of that is still applicable whether you use decks, laptops or whatnot.Mudfoot))) wrote:Is there a button on any of these programs that will give me back all the time I spent learning to beatmatch?
again, it's the PERSON who is the DJ, not the gear.

as many as your soundcard/mixer can facilitate its a fully functional DAW besides being a pseudo-dj'ing application.
digital vs vinyl sound quality is a whole different can of worms... its personal preference i guess. ive heard some stunning mixes in traditional and ableton formats...
it doesnt make anyone a better dj, it just gives dj's new tools to work with.

so is that 10/100/1000 simultaneous tracks with Ableton running on say your pc/mac? - I honestly don't know but just want to compare to the 3 decks scenarioKonehed wrote: as many as your soundcard/mixer can facilitate its a fully functional DAW besides being a pseudo-dj'ing application.
if the end result is no better then why buy the equipment?Konehed wrote: ive heard some stunning mixes in traditional and ableton formats...

Benefits I see with Ableton is that you could carry more tunes for less weight than a box of vinyl; and you can play tunes that are not available on vinyl - maybe ones you made.
I'm more tempted by Torq/Serato/Final Scratch with same benefits and which look to me more like dj tools than producer tools like Ableton, Reason, Logic etc.
I think there should have been more beef when DJ's stopped playing Discs then we'd have new names for those new performers like:
TJ's - Tape jockeys
MJ's - Mouse jockeys
PJ's - Pyjamas
BJ's - Button Jockeys
Parson and Sapphic - nice1 thanks I will download and listen

i have considered getting torq, but it looks like quite the CPU hog. am i offbase? i use serato mostly, but also have FS, but i really like the ideas goin on behind torq...especially the syncing with ableton bit...Parson wrote:torq syncs with reason and ableton too

its up to the individual, i wont fault anyone for choosing either
use what you know, use what makes you happy
Reading my posts I sound like a right luddite (they feared change)
I agree do what makes you happy
we had lots of snow in London today and I went sledging in Richmond park - it was a right laugh
