I think most people just let him choose the name for them, thats what i do, i like to see what haack comes up with, just because i think he tries to make the name reflective of the vibe of the tune! hah at first when he started doing it i was like "yer naming our songs thats kinda lame" but now i'm pretty stoked on it to be honest, its just kinda interesting is all...soulshynchyld wrote:hahaahhah... um just edited my last post!! chea brutha
cant wait for the next one!! geterdone, hey also whats this new party drug you guys got over in tea land, methadrone? sounds kinda gay... i guess im just not a huge fan of speed type drugs (i think thats kinda what it is right?)

Really hope I've got the mindset to do the next one. I had another period (ooo my faff iz bleedin!) of zero creative drive and some solid depression so I couldn't even face downloading the sample pack till after I heard all the tunes and realized it was a great pack (nice one Stappy!).
But, it's come back again so hopefully I'll be in next time round

Good job guys!

p.s. Mephedrone (Methadone's the Opioid) is a sort of Cocaine / Amphetamine crossbreed (effects-wise, not chemical structure-wise) with a bit of an MDMA feel but not much (it mostly acts on Dopamine and Norepinepherine instead of Serotonin).
It's moreish as fuckery and can feel a bit dirty with a hellish comedown if you do too much, but as of... tomorrow (16th) it's class B

Tis a shame as I only got to try a small dab of it once at the last gig I played and it was really, really nice

Ah well, c'est la vie du la fucking nanny state

Debut album "Bass, Space, Pace & Peace" out now on Methodology Recordings!

3's the best. Jump off.
Re: DSF SAMPLE PACK COMPETITION-22
ok, despite of nowasj's rigourous spamming.. I like #3 the best. so had to vote for it. The sounds just fit perfectly when the beat drops. Use of the siren and break is also great. Always have a hard time deciding, so chose the song i'd like to repeat listen the most. Was close call with Compound which is also great, and prob has the best sound of all. I really like the deep sounds in the background. It's works in a different kinda way, #3 drew a bit me more with the break stuff.nowaysj wrote:3's the best. Jump off.
Also have to mention #15, whose sound reminded me of Amon Tobin, but which also made me feel like a drunk teenager trying to chat up some girls just after stepping of a merry go round. Listening to it makes me dizzy

Re: DSF SAMPLE PACK COMPETITION-22
yeah i know what methadone is. I dunno, i just like opiates (in serious moderation), cocaine makes me fucking depressed sometimes, even when im really high on it not even close to coming down yet. but if taken at the right time i can seriouslly enjoy a good coke buzz.wrexile wrote:Yea I like it when HAACK chooses the names : ) Tis interesting.tavravlavish wrote:I think most people just let him choose the name for them, thats what i do, i like to see what haack comes up with, just because i think he tries to make the name reflective of the vibe of the tune! hah at first when he started doing it i was like "yer naming our songs thats kinda lame" but now i'm pretty stoked on it to be honest, its just kinda interesting is all...soulshynchyld wrote:hahaahhah... um just edited my last post!! chea brutha

im to lazy to check which one you are talking about, but i heard two songs on there that sorta match that discript, and while it seemed like their mixes we super muddy they were both pretty trippy and original and i was pretty stoked on both of them.surefya wrote:Also have to mention #15, whose sound reminded me of Amon Tobin, but which also made me feel like a drunk teenager trying to chat up some girls just after stepping of a merry go round. Re: DSF SAMPLE PACK COMPETITION-22
Love how this has juss become a thread on Methadone.............
Either way, I will make sure to note that entries in the next competition will provide a track title to avoid any artist conflict etc.

Final
Pretty abrasive noise to start with... I think I like it! And the drop - full of energy, completely different to anything in the contest so far. The mix does feel a bit rough and ready, but it fits well with the tune's overall style. Love the amount of things happening in the tune, different not just a standard wobbler. My concern might be that apart from that main midrange bass sound everything else sound a bit wishy washy - I'm really very aware of any subbass and the drums, especially the kick, sort of get lost in the soup. Its difficult to make a banger in these competitions though (especially with the samples I choose) and this is an impressive track.
All I Do
That breakbeat is really fun but feels oddly agressively high-passed to me. It clatters satisfyingly in the upper frequencies but there doesnt seem to be any kick holding it down. Those keys playing the descending riff are brilliant, I would like to have seen possibly a cleaner mix with the drums taking up a more rooted position with that melody having a more important role. The other incidental sounds and the main bass riff weren't as engaging to me. Vocals were well treated in this one (lush delay) and were effective. Nice one.
Baby Bin (lol)
LOVE the use of the vocals in this one. Completely different from the entries I've heard to this point. That main percussive clacking sound is nice too, and the descending synthy organ nice. On the other hand I was convinced by the sub/distorted kick thing going on, and there was some weirdly bassy reverb coming with the snare sound which do it for me. A bit short too - I felt like there was enough ideas to get 3 minutes out of this one and still keep interesting. I'm a little bit in two minds, because there was a lot of cool ideas I felt going on in this, but the execution wasn't quite there. The post-drop sound felt a little artificially expanded, and there didn't seem to be much in the way of a real groove, it was more a collage of sound. And the kick/sub definatelty wasn't sitting right for me either...
Horny Sea Critters
I like the drums sounds alot, and the melody thats come in above the wobble. I would say however that the intro section could do with being a little shorter, or at least having something more happening in it. As the song the song progresses I find myself liking the drums a lot (and the vocal bit) but the wobble doesn't seem to go anywhere and this is sort of indicative of the tune as a whole, which although pretty well put together feels like it needed some more time spent on it.
Refuse
I like the brass in the intro, and the drop into beat is great. The deep, woody kick really works well to my ears - a personal preference thing as much as anything else I know but it feels solidly put together, as does the percussion as a whole. Slightly formulaic in construction - even from looking at the waveform I can see the 6 sections of 16 bars you used, but that said you use the time well - it felt like less time had passed - and the track has plenty of ideas to keep it interesting over the course of its 3 minutes.
All I Want
Cool 'throbbing' feel to the intro, although I'd say there wasn't enough of a specific divide between the intro and the main section - the transition is interesting but perhaps not pronounced enough to be effective at lowers listening volumes. Definately a different textural feel to this one - the drums sound great, what I can hear of them. Wish they were higher in the mix, that snare sounds like it's cracking nicely and the little fills are great too. Definately a flying lotus vibe in the atypcial construction in terms of mixing, and the structure cleverly uses the time without growing stale. Brilliant idea for an ending too, definately taking a different approach - big track from where I'm standing.
Sonic Putty
Lots of energy in that intro buildup, but what it leads into doesn't quite seem to fit stylisticly - anyway - Loving the drums, really snappy clap/snare, would great in a club. However, the drums get lost under that big lead sound which really dominates the track. A bit unfortunately because the drums and percussion sound pretty good. I think the energy is sort of lost in the second half of the track though, which is a shame, because I was into it at the beginning, just didn't manage to keep me engrossed.
Cytoplasm
In terms of getting it closer to the three minute guideline I think some fat could have been cut from the intro. That aside, the track definitely has some cool stuff going on and is right up in the top few entries in terms of sound design, mixing and so on. Love that glitchy melody part and the drums work well together and with the rest of the track. Unfortunately in the last minute so it all becomes a bit lethargic, I felt between 2:30 and 3:30 there wasn't much to hold the interest and it was a long time to expect me to listen while everything was deconstructed and put back together again. In any case this was in the top few entries for me at least.
I'll stay coy on who I'm voting for though.

re: Mephedrine - was just reading about this shit. Basically synthetic Khat (East African plant chewed for stimulant properties.) I guess some dude in the UK used it twice a week for a year and had to go to the loony bin or something, hence the ban. Interesting shit... but I'll probably stick with my winning formula below:

4 real? How much caffeine in there?
Re: DSF SAMPLE PACK COMPETITION-22
Dunno how much caffeine, but man that shit gets me amped (esp. in conjunction with the NOS drink.)
The UpTime drink is very good too, tastes like 7up but I got to the point where they were like crack - I'd have 2 or 3 a day and would almost be foaming at the mouth by the end of it.
The black package max-strength UpTime tablets, though, are a good solid kick in the pants by themselves.
Look at us talking about stimulant drugs in a samplepack thread...
