Re: the problem with dubstep productions today..
I was making hip hop when I first started and that was pretty much all sample based. Didn't get into VST's and the like until I started playing with dubstep. I like to mix them both, I do really like the raw sound you get from sampling and always liked some vinyl crackle but I find sound design a really creative process too.
Re: the problem with dubstep productions today..
I try to find really obscure samples for my tunes
usually something funny.. inserted just before the drop
as far as sampling other peoples music..
I was over that in the 90's

easy: listen to better music.
challenging: take up the fight and write better music.
not a solution to anything, ever: complaining about the state of music on the interwebticles.

stop bitchin and just dont listen to the shit you dont like.

Re: the problem with dubstep productions today..
Play with some timestretching. Slowing samples the fuck down can sound good. Slicing them up and rearranging. Taking tiny bits out of vox samples and mashing them up. Never been too into just taking a 16 bar and looping lol. Tons of stuff you can do with samples, if you extract some notes you can use them as instruments etc. The imperfections from samples can add a lot of character.
Re: the problem with dubstep productions today..
I'm not the all knowing authority on sampling (or production in general) but here's what works for me and what I do usually:Subside wrote:Someone should share their sampling techniques with me
- I like going for vocals. I'll chop half a second, one or two seconds here or there...not so much the traditional hip-hop chopping and rearranging of loops. then you can lay out the sample across your keyboard and play away (or program the notes in your piano roll).
- I don't go for clean sounding samples. if it came from youtube, then it came from youtube - end of. if it came from some old, damaged vinyl, then so be it. I like things that dey sound shitty, like trash.
- I'm starting to sample shit like percussive loops out of tunes, because I can't program a convincing conga loop if you know what I mean.
- for bass try sampling random sounds...and then play it on a lower end (for sub). if it comes through and is subby enough, go for it. had a bunch of tunes like this but I lost them all

yeah my shit is probably 80% samples.

Utter fucking bollocks.mc wayne wrote:the problem is simple, Producers aren't sampling anymore, sampling and "crate digging". In the early 90s. Rave music was aboout 75% sampled sounds from hip hop. The rest of it was synths and soundmodules. All dubstep now is presets from VSTi's. that's why it all sounds the same, I'd like to hear more vairity. It's bad to listen to a dubstep tune and go, I know that preset off Albino or whatever.
Doesn't have to be actual crate digging, you can sample mp3s I guess. I think people need to listen to more 20th century music. there's still more good fish to catch from the 20th century.

What is sampling going to solve? What about learning to make music properly, instead of just nicking your favourite bits off a thrift shop record? If you do that, chances are, the best part of YOUR music is going to be the sample you made of somebody else's music.
Innit? Innit though? Get me? inart?
Sampling, or lack thereof, isn't the problem. It sounds the same because too many feckless ass clowns are out there flooding the world with idealess 'music' which all sounds the fucking same because it IS all the fucking same.
'Genre' has become an excuse for identikit nonsense allowing uncreative people to go around remaking each others music time and time again to be part of some little inbred scene. It's easy. Same track, different name. Oh no, mate, it's the one with the Robocop sample in it, not the one with the Matrix sample in it.
Make a template. Save, tweak, insert different sample, save new track. X 100. Proud?
Nobody gives a fuck about presets other than geeky bedroom producers. There are a million good guitar songs out there using the same 'preset'. Nobody calls that shit out? How so? Are they concentrating on something the average bedroom 'producer' isn't?

Do you think they use sampling as a CRUTCH? If we took all their samples away, would there be anything left?j-one wrote:DJ Shadow, RJD2 et all, untalented thieves then?wang wrote:What is sampling going to solve? How about we get back to why music all sounds the same. The original poster HAD A POINT, but his solution wasn't a good one.
Why does a lot of Dubstep sound identical?

Re: the problem with dubstep productions today..
^ I agree it's nothing to do with sampling (just defending the art of sampling).
I think a lot of people of recent think there are more rules to dubstep than there actually are (e.g. thinking it must wobble, and be in your face). If it went back to the original agenda of bass music at or around 140 then there's a lot more scope for originality. Wobble bass on it's own can get boring fast because it takes up so much of the frequency range that you just end up with a half step beat and the same wobble bass someone else probably made a year ago.
IMO of course.

^ Not trying to get into another "brostep" argument btw, just think dubstep is so saturated with unoriginal garbage. I have no problem with teh good wobblez.
