what do you think is better to have serato or cdj's?

Post by thierry_le_dj » Sat Apr 24, 2010 2:44 am

well i been thinking of getting serato's as i love vinyl

but most gig's i play at these days has cdj's set up..

so at home i would prefer mixing on the table's

but i guess cdj's are still ok to have?

what would you like to have serato or cdj's?

a good dvs
i don't use serato at home, but have it installed for gigs. def a must for anyone who loves vinyl feel and control. i can mix on cdjs no problem but def not my fave way to spin shit not on wax.

DVS of your choice,i.e. Serato. Cdj's have a lot of cool looping and cue point things though. Would never use one of em though.

in clubs you'll deal with serato, technics, cdj800 or 1000s. at home is your game. one day my rider will include denons or ms pinky, till then learn what is standard for playing out. at home use the best for you.

people seem to forget you can use Serato on cdj's. I have serato. If i had the coin for cdj's I would jump all over it, they are the industry standard. If I was to play out and couldnt hook up the serato I would be lost.

i got serato, best thing i ever bought

BUT

things you have to bear in mind that sometimes its a pain in the arse to set up while someones on deck already, and sometimes you get shoddy dj booths that sometimes the equipments below par and it fucks up

cdjs for quick easy gigs, serato for proper nights

but what the point of having serato and cdj together?

aren't they both like digital i mean serato u just need a lappy for the track and cdj you just copy the track's to a c.d?

CDJs still benefit. When using a DVS you are given the freedom of your entire music library at your finger tips separated into any category you desire. For example if I were doing a set I would sort my playlists by bpm and have different playlists for different styles of dubstep and other genres. Not only do you have all of your music right in front of you in a clear organized fashion, but you are also given a waveform which is helpful at times. However, I use Traktor Duo which many will shit on, but I've never had a problem. Traktor gives me additional effects to what my mixer has.

This being said I use the vinyl control. CDJs have some cool cue point features and what not but the feel is extremely unnatural to me.

Years ago I would have said CDJs but at the end of the day you'll just be burning your Mp3's to CD anyway (needless middle step) so whats the point... Serato

im suprised nobody has really mentioned the true longness of serato. in the booth trying to squeeze past another dj and 10 mcs with your phone in your mouth for light, hoping that u dont unplug the wrong channel whilst trying ur best to not mess up his set. if it worked smoothly every time then id be all for it but ive been embarrassed by it more times than i care to remember. on the other hand, if you have your heart set on serato i will most definitely sell you mine for £300 if u want :D:D

The point is, Serato now has CD controls so u dont HAVE to use the vinyl controls, just pop in the serato CD and your going. u would never have to burn a disc and u can still use then waveform view to tidy your mix and know where u are in the track. But Serato is a luxury item..I would really want to get acquainted with CDJ's first so you don't have to rely on Serato to mix. IUnless u are pretty happy with what u have to play on at home and your mixing skills. CDJ THEN serato if u got the scratch (no pun intended)

yeah when its working fine all is well apart from when serato releases its special move: you are 100% sure the power supply is in as well as the usb. more than 100% sure. then BANG no music, making you look like a complete tit. it just seems to me that anything like that running off usb will always be prone to problems even with a fast laptop

I've had serato for just over a month now and I can safely say it's the best thing I've owned in a long time.

Was playing last week however and one deck didn't work, but I always carry a some CD's in case this kind of thing happens.

Well worth spending £530, it's a brilliant bit of kit and will only get better and better as they develop scratch live software.

I'm a seasoned serato user, I really don't know if that would be the case if I wasn't into the turntablism world as well. It's a fantastic tool but comes with a few gotchas...

For Serato:
1) Portable, can be used regardless of what turntables/CDJs/mixers you have to use.

2) Vinyl feel, nothing better than mixing records plus there's a whole how of added bonus (loops, cues points, etc).

3) Big library instantly available, no need to pick the right disks to take.

4) Can easily use 1 turntable is there are technical issues.

Against Serato:
1) Setup, if you're lucky enough to play in a club where it's already set up or after a DJ who uses it to then it's all good but is you have to plug in mid flow of the night it can be a mission trying not to disturb the DJ who is playing.

2) Wonky wiring, if there turntable has had the audio wires replace by an idiot who's soldering the new ones out of phase or the carts are wired wrong then you're fucked. It's a good idea to carry a set of your own carts to help protect yourself from this situation imho.

3) Getting drunk, it's easy enough to hold together a reasonable set after a few beers with CDs or vinyl (so long as you don't have that 1 drink to many), however with Serato the hassles of packing up and dangers of hitting the wrong keys on the keyboard are quite hard to keep control of after a few.

4) Laptop, waiting (hoping) for the fucker to boot up/shutdown and also avoiding the urge to start at the screen.

I love serato and I've spent a lot of time to really learn interesting things to do with it but sometimes I reckon CDJs would be a little easier.

haha this sometimes seems the case with me, its horrible having to keep an eye on your serato bag whilst your getting lashed up after your set

once i went to another club after a set and had to slug my bag with laptop serato n everything else
